Annoying movie motif: a friend with a sanctuary home

Post by stoickov »

I never buy it. When main character needs to hide or some kind of help, there it is: a perfect old friend with a perfect house, which is a mystical sanctuary. Usually the scenery is so exaggerated: ridiculously well decorated house in perfect location, etc.
Examples:
Children of men - Michael Caine's house in the forest
Twister - house in the desert of Helen Hunt's aunt (?)

Do you remember more examples? I'm sure it's popular motif.

Even though it was a beautiful home inside of a boat, this motif was used in the God-awful shitfest known as Drop Dead Fred. (I watched it out of morbid curiosity, since it was my girlfriend's favorite childhood movie)

I think there's an example in Bird on a Wire, where Mel Gibson gets shot in the ass and this sexy vet lady removes the bullet while telling Goldie Hawn to fuck this stud.

The Bourne Identity. Though, as often happens in these films, the sanctuary isn't as safe as they believe it to be. Other than that and the first one I thought of--Children of Men--I can't seem to think of any others, even though I know I've seen this a number of times...

No, I don't think it's that. That one is actually quite reasonable. There are no to-good-to-be-true, and perfect scenery factors.

I think for this particular trope the sanctuary home must be one that is known to the heroes, and is inhabited by a friend of the heroes. Since no one in Zombieland personally knew or considered Bill Murray their friend, I don't think that counts.
