Forum Upgrade - Bugs & Comments

Post by mpowell »

It had been a very long time since we upgraded the back-end Forum Software on Criticker. But this weekend, we finally did so, catching up on years worth of updates.

We use PHPBB, and are now at the most recent version. But we have done a lot of custom work on the code, so that it merges more seamlessly into Criticker.

Because of this in-house customization, and because of the wide gulf between version numbers of the last active version and this one, we fully expect there to be some issues. Hopefully not many! Please post any problems you discover in this thread. We plan on working them aggressively, until the forums are once again running smoothly.

It's still on our list of possible future enhancements. If we do this, we'd like to have it integrated into the regular Criticker profile page -- we don't really want a second profile page. So it's a little more complicated than just activating a feature. But, we do agree that there's a need for it.

What happened to the "View new topics" and View unanswered topics" links that used to be at the top of the forum page? Were they moved somewhere else or have they been removed altogether?

Thanks for updating the forum.

So far I have found no bugs other than a dysfunctional RSS feed, which for me is a crucial feature to keeping up with what's new. Edit: Also, it's probably not a bug, but location and TCI info is no longer displayed under everyone's profile pics on forum pages.

I'm actually not sure -- I'll take a look to see if this was something expected, in the new forum software updates.

Thanks for alerting us to those things -- we'll get them fixed up soon.

The search functionality of the forum is missing as well. Or I am overlooking something...

Also the forum is hardly usable on a mobile device. It looks like you have set a fixed width or something, but I have to scroll a lot to the left to keeping reading the text.

It looks like searching is activated within a particular forum or topic, but not from the main forum page -- we'll have to fix that.

We're looking at this, too... better mobile support was actually supposed to be one of the great new benefits of the upgrade
