Movie News

This weekend, it's all about Superman, as James Gunn brings his take on the Man of Steel to theaters around the world. After turning the relatively unknown Guardians of the Galaxy into a box office juggernaut with three well-received films, comic fans are anxious to see if he can do the same for the Last Son of Krypton.

To achieve this tricky task, Gunn has handed the cape to David Corenswet, a Julliard-trained actor from Philly, who had beforehand only appeared in small, supporting roles. But Gunn apparently had little doubt about his casting decision, telling GQ, "I couldn't go for someone that had the look, but didn't have the chops. I couldn't go for someone that had the chops but didn't have the look. I couldn't go for someone that had the looks and the chops, but couldn't do the comedic parts, or couldn't do the more vulnerable aspects". And apparently, Corenswet can do it all.

Of course, that will ultimately be for audiences to decide! And Corenswet has some big, red boots to fill. From Christopher Reeve to Henry Cavill, there have been some memorable Superdudes... and some less memorable... and at least one that would have almost certainly been extremely memorable, had production on his film finished. Film Festivals

On the other side of the cinematic spectrum, is a report from the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, in the Czech Republic. This is one of the world's oldest film festivals, known for its focus on Eastern European and World Cinema. The 59th KVIFF wrapped up this weekend, awarding its Crystal Globe to Better to Go Mad in the Wild, a documentary about two eccentric twins who live in the Bohemian Forest, and have wildly different perspectives on life.

A glance at the festival's previous winners reveals a jury sensibility which is willing to take chances on extremely obscure films... in fact, the Criticker admin team had only collectively seen one of the winners from the past 24 years. How many have you seen? That's easy to check at Criticker, by simply loading the collection of KVIFF Crystal Globe Winners!

Recent Mini-Reviews Getting Love

2 Stars for Paxton's review of Goldfinger
The first movie makes its titular villain an afterthought. The second strengthens the tension of the fated hands throwing by teasing it until the very end. Goldfinger wants as many interactions between hero and villain as possible and the relationship itself is a strong point for the film. I still found this to be the weakest of the first three, but I also don’t own any bitcoin yet so what do I know?
A dud. Too long, too convoluted and too preoccupied with reference to and reverence for the series as a whole, seemingly forgetting to add what made those films so engaging. A real shame because Cruise is still game and the two big action set pieces are amazing.
2 Stars for BeeDub's review of Alice, Sweet Alice
You can rail against the Catholic church all you want (and many have), but no one can deny that it's the most cinematically pleasing Christian denomination.
2 Stars for Scuffed's review of Face/Off
If you're doing a sick dive out in the open, bullets can't hit you. It's the power of the dove.
2 Stars for JLFM's review of Jurassic World: Rebirth
Inexcusably boring. Like, I’m sorry, I know movies are complicated mechanisms and it’s a miracle that any get made and completed at all, but it should not be this hard for someone who isn't named Steven Spielberg to make a good Jurassic Park/World movie.
