'Lal Salaam' chronicles the personal and professional life of two life long friends and communist party workers Nettur Stephen (Mohanlal) and DK (Murali).
Appukuttan & Ananthan (Jagadish) are twin brothers, but exact opposites. Ananthan is a "Kalari" expert, doesn't care about his family & is a roamer. Appukuttan, in contrast, is amiable & struggles to support their family in Ananthan's absence. In another town, Swamy (Pujappura Ravi) is in needs of a toughie to get rid of his bothersome tenants & he tries to recruit Ananthan for the job, hearing of his repute. Appukuttan receives the offer letter meant for Ananthan, & decides to go posing as him.
Jayadevan (Dileep), who is after someone named Ananthan, is himself on the run from two thugs & seeks refuge with his friends Hariprasad (Sainuddin), Bahuleyan (Harisree Asokan) & Premadasan (Jagadish). When Jayadevan learns that the granddaughter Athira (Divya Unni) of Neelakantan Vaidyar (Captain Raju), who owned the Ayurveda ashram where his friends work, is the lover of Ananthan, Jayadevan decides to pretend to be a Swami to infiltrate the ashram & to get close to Athira & hence to Ananthan.
Raju (Jagadish), who comes to the city in search of a job, woos Shyama (Sunitha) with the help of his old friend Williams (Siddique), & in the process Williams also fall in love with Shyama's friend Mercy (Suchitra). Later, Raju & Williams, who start a video store business, cover a political function, where they accidentally tape someone explode a bomb which kills the Chief Minister. This lands them in trouble, & they go on the run, with both the bad guys & the cops after them, wanting the tape.
Kunjukuttiyamma (Lakshmi), the grand old lady of the Kannettumkara family, have three daughters, all of whom have plans to snare Kochukrishnan (Mukesh), her only grandson, for their own daughters, and thus lay their hands on her vast assets. Kochukrishnan & his friend Harindran (Siddique) hatch various plans to escape this, but to no avail. In between this, a girl named Gopika (Sowmya) shows up claiming to be Kunjukuttiyamma's grandchild & her son Ambotti's (Nedumudi Venu) illegitimate daughter.
M. Madhava Menon (Thilakan), a powerful politico, destroys the life & family of a young man, Johnson (Kamal Hassan), for having a love affair with his daughter Renu (Urmila Matondkar). Years later, Johnson returns to take revenge on Madhava Menon, now the Chief Minister of Kerala. Using brains rather than brawns, he enlists the help of an apery artist Jayaram (Jayaram), & they start to intercept the CM's radio & TV broadcasts to substitute their own versions, to destroy the CM's political image.
Six mimicry artists - Sabu (Siddique), Unnikrishnan (Jagadish), Jimmy (Asokan), Nissar (Sainuddin), Manoj (Baiju) & Anwar (Kalabhavan Ansar) - stumble upon an accident scene, from where Nissar steals a teddy bear, which they later find to contain diamonds. Afraid to go to the Police, & learning that the diamonds belong to the smuggler Kasargod Kadarbhai, they go in search of Kadarbhai, only to chicken out & return. Kasargod Kadarbhai's men get on their tail & they go on the run from Kadarbhai.
Four unemployed young men - Jayan (Mukesh), Sunny (Siddique), Suresh (Saikumar), Abdul Nasar (Sainuddin) - start an employment agency promising everyone a job if they register with them after paying Rs. 50. After spending all of it, they realize that procuring jobs for others wasn't as easy as they thought. As they tried to abscond at night, a woman (Chithra) running away from someone, seeks refuge with them. When they wake up in the morning they find the woman dead, along with their pal Suresh.
A young man, Ajayan (Jagadish), after the financing company he was a cashier in, sinks, runs off to Madras to escape public wrath. There, he stumbles upon a young girl child someone left on the railway tracks to die. He rescues the child & later tries to dispose of her in various ways, but the child always ended up back with him. After a while, Ajayan becomes attached to the child, names her Kukku & takes up a job to support her. At that point, the child's real mother turns up & claims her.
Malini Laxman (Madhavi), a PhD student invents a vaccine which would make a human immune to narcotics, but the formula gets stolen from her, her husband killed & she jailed for selling drugs, in a plot masterminded by her professor Ramamoorthy (Charu Haasan), Poonthurayil Itty (Rajan P. Dev) & Police commissioner Sathyanathan (Soman). Malini ends up in Mumbai where she becomes wealthy from the Mumbai Underworld & returns as Aparna, to take revenge on the people responsible for her losses.
A con-artist, Gopinathan aka Gopi (Siddique), a pick-pocket Mathunni (Sainuddin), & a law-school dropout Maya Devi (Urvashi), are friends & neighbors & pulls off a couple of con schemes together. Later, Gopi gets selected as a Sub Inspector of Police, after which he turns incorrupt. Misunderstandings drives Gopi & Maya apart, but they still loved each other. When some wealthy jewels & statues get stolen from the govt. museum by some bigwigs, Gopi, Mathunni & Maya team up again to retrieve them.
Vishnu Menon, Regional Manager of Indo-Arab Travels & a martinet, has 7 unrealistic conditions for his future bride including the girl being able to cook various cuisines, be fluent in Hindi, know driving & Carnatic music & be brave. Vishnu's friend & co-worker Krishnankutty (Jagadish) & brother-in-law V.G. Kurup (Jagathi) tricks him into marrying his steno Lathika (Urvashi) after deceiving him into believing that Lathika had all the qualities. After the marriage, they try to keep up the story.
Ashwathy (Suchitra) & Mary are co-workers at 'New India Chemicals', but hate each others' guts & are always fighting with each other at work. Aswathy & her husband Dr. Balakrishnan aka Balu (Siddique) move to a new rental home, only to find that their neighbor is Mary. Mary's husband Zakaria (Jagadish) turns out to be Balu's old pal. Zakaria & Balu decides to reconcile their wives' differences, but soon they are also drawn into the conflict, with disastrous results for both families.
The singer-storyteller duo of 'Ganabhooshanam' Cochin Brothers, Girish Cochin (Jayaram) & Satish Cochin (Premkumar), gets tricked into going for performing at the village of Puthukkotta, where the families of Palathara & Madassery are feuding with each other, after Thampi (Captain Raju) of Madassery is jailed for killing his illicit son Ananthan (Krishna Kumar). After Girish & Satish declare that they are going to tell Thampi's tale, both families want Cochin Brothers to tell the tale their way.
Brahmin sisters Allu (K.P.A.C. Lalitha) & Komalam (Kalpana) are married to Ganapathi Pai (Innocent) & Ananda Pai (Jagathi), who run the family-owned business as the "Pai Brothers". Frustrated by their stinginess & sternness at work, manager Kesavan Nair (Janardanan) & his Mumbai-based mobster son Thrivikraman (Baiju) plot to turn them against each other & steal company cash. They plant an accomplice, sultry Mohini (Alphonsa), as the brothers' new steno, who starts to manipulate the Pai brothers.
Appu (Mohanlal), an orphaned young man, considers the mother-in-law (K.R. Vijaya) of CI Gopan (Murali), of the Mangalathu family, as a mother figure. Looking to get a job as a driver in Dubai, Appu dumps his blacksmithing trade & learns driving. One night, he witnesses 3 people trying to dispose of the corpse of a dancer, Sugandhi, & reports it to Gopan. Sugandhi's killers turn out to be Gopan's friends, so Gopan frames Appu for it & gets him jailed. Appu escapes from jail to vindicate himself.
Best friends Eby (Kunchako Boban) & Sona (Shalini) were born on the same day, grew up together, are neighbors & goes to the same college. After they had to stay apart for a week for the first time, Eby develops feelings of love towards Sona, but stifles them, afraid of Sona's response & also because Sona had responded to overtures from college mate Prakash Mathew (Boban Alumoodan). However, when Sona realizes that marrying Prakash means leaving Eby, she also realizes her love towards Eby.
Millionaire Achuthan Nair (Thilakan) of the Manikyamangalam family, shocks his greedy relatives waiting for his demise, when he reveals that he has an illicit daughter, Shoba, from an old affair. His relatives hire an imposter, Balagopalan (Mukesh), to pose as Shoba's husband & tell Nair that Shoba is dead, thus ending Nair's wait for his daughter. Prabhakara Menon (Nedumudi), Nair's pal, on the other hand, tries to prevent Balagopalan from saying this, fearing for Nair's fragile health.
P. Sukumaran (Mammootty), youth wing leader of a political party, spends all of his time & money for the party, frustrating long-suffering wife Valsala (Shantikrishna) who supported Sukumaran's outlays. However, when Sukumaran blocks a job transfer which Valsala had requested, she finally snaps & moves out with their kid & joins her new job. Soon after, Sukumaran gets elected as the new Industries Minister, but after getting sworn in, Sukumaran feels lonely without his wife & pines for her.
Abhirami (Chippy), lovechild of famous doctor Dr. Saratchandra Varma (Narendra Prasad) falls in love with her boss, Roy (Siddique), the owner of the advertising company where she worked. However, when Roy demands to know her whereabouts, Abhirami is torn between her father who didn't want to publicly acknowledge her & her lover. After a failed suicide attempt, Saratchandra Varma decides to accept her, but Abhirami's local guardian, her uncle Vishnu (Shammi Thilakan), poses obstacles.
Manikantan (Kalabhavan Mani) takes up a job as a zookeeper to fulfill his uncle Kesavan's (Captain Raju) demand that he needs to procure a govt. job to be able to marry his daughter Anju. However, when a bear escapes from the zoo, Manikantan, with the help of makeup artist Sundaran Arpukara (Salu Kuttanadu) & coworker Suvasu (Jagathi), has to disguise himself as a bear & take the escaped bear's place. However, capturing the real bear proves knotty, extending Manikantan's stay in the zoo.
Achootty (Mammootty), a fisherman, sacrifices his own dreams & desires for educating his daughter Radhamani (Mathu), whom he wanted to be a doctor, but his hopes & dreams are shattered when Radhamani runs away & marries Raghavan (Asokan), son of his best friend Kochu Raman (Murali). Taking up a challenge by Achootty, Raghavan goes alone to the sea to get a prize catch, but goes missing & Achootty gets blamed for Raghavan's disappearance.
N. D. Raman Nair aka NDR (Innocent), a rich businessman who used to rule over his 2 sons - Ramanan (Asokan) & Rameshan (Dilip) - with an iron fist, gets a raw deal when his daughter-in-laws fight with each other & his sons turn henpecked. To regain control over his household, NDR brings in an actress, Parvathi (Kalpana), to act as his wife & discipline his sons & daughter-in-laws. NDR's plans backfire, however, when Parvathi gets impregnated by someone in the household & he is held responsible.
A 4 year old girl, Deepa (Geethu Mohandas), strikes up a relationship with a stranger, whom she came to call 'Telephone Uncle', over phone conversations. Initially apprehensive of the relationship, Deepa's widow mom Aleena (Asha Jayaram), also grows fond of the stranger, who soon becomes an integral part of their lives, even without meeting in real life. However, unbeknown to them, the stranger carried a dark secret.
Two petty thieves, Pachan (Jagathi Sreekumar) & Paramu (Sreenivasan) finally strike big, but Pachan gives Paramu the slip & runs away with the money. Pachan swindles more money from a rich businessman Purushothaman (Rajan P. Dev), by pretending to be in love with his invalid daughter Manisha (Sreeja), but Paramu steals the loot from Pachan this time. With the new-found cash base, Paramu sets out to swindle rich heiress Neena (Kavya Madhavan) & her father.
Two prominent families & business rivals, the Uppukandam brothers, Kariachan (Captain Raju), Paulachan (Keerikkadan Jose), Xavichan (Babu Antony), Josekutty (Jagadish) & Thankachan (Baiju), & the Ettuveettil Pillais, headed by Ananthan Pillai (Rajan P. Dev) & his sons & nephews, have been feuding for years, aggravated by the fact that Xavichan had gone to jail for killing Vasu Pillai (Johny) of the Ettuveettil family, who in turn had killed Roy Mathews (Siddique), Xavichan's brother-in-law.
Pappan (Rahman), a famous singer, gets killed by his rival Umesh (Jose), a week before his wedding to his girlfriend Zarina (Lizy). However, it turned out that Yama (Thilakan), the Lord of death, took Pappan's life mistaking him for someone else & that he had a week more to live. Yama gives Pappan different freshly-dead bodies to try on till then & finally Pappan settles for Devadas (Mohanlal), a cop killed in action. Now, as Devadas, Pappan has to prove his death & bring Umesh to justice.
A pompous millionaire, Shankar Das (Mammootty), comes to a village in Kuttanad & throws around money, including financing a film at the Chathoth family house, directed by native struggling director Sarath (Biju Menon). Das, however, had the ulterior motive of marrying his childhood sweetheart, Anuradha Panicker (Bhanupriya), of the Chathoth family. When Das learns that Sarath & Anuradha were in love, he tries to get her by trapping her family into a heavy debt & asking for her hand in return.
Three kids, Biju, Vinu & Lakshmi (Sonia), set an imp free from the clutches of an evil sorcerer (Kottarakkara Sridharan Nair), who had kept the imp captive to dig out a treasure, which was only attainable by the magical powers of the imp. The imp then assumes the form of a human kid & befriends the trio. But, as they have fun together, the evil sorcerer slowly closes down on them.
Famous astrologer Mulankattu Gurukkal (Karamana Janardanan Nair) predicts jobless youth Balagopalan (Sreenivasan) as having a unique gift - he will bring good luck to everyone who comes in contact with him, but he or his loved ones would be unable to benefit from it. Hearing about this, local politicians & bigwigs try to kidnap Balagopalan to keep him for themselves & to benefit from his good luck charm. Balagopalan gets exploited in different ways & the charm turns out to be bad luck for him.
James (James), an impoverished youth, escapes from Kerala after faking his death & comes to Kodaikanal to take up the post of a music teacher at the Hill Valley Public School where his slaphappy ways gall the martinet school manager-owner Maya Johns (Anusha). However, after some initial spats, they get attracted to each other, but Maya's relatives oppose the relationship. James, meanwhile, has his own tragic secret to hide beneath his cheerful self.
Kannan (Jagadish), a government office peon, marries Radhika (Rekha), a postgraduate bank employee, in a major mix-up at the temple. Stuck with him per her father's wishes, but repulsed at the thought of being the wife of an unsophisticated & undereducated man, Radhika spurns his advances. Seeking advice from his best friends Govindan (Jagathi Sreekumar) & Hari (Siddique), Kannan tries various ways to woo her and win her heart.
Impoverished & jobless young men, Unnikrishnan (Jagadish) & Dasan (Baiju), frees a friendly spirit Chathunni (Innocent) from capture by mistake, who becomes their friend. With Chathunni's help, Unnikrishnan gets back at his evil step-mother Pankajam (K.P.A.C. Lalitha) & tries to win his girlfriend Maya (Mathu), whose father cop Rajagopal (K.P.A.C. Sunny), planned to marry her off to a family friend's son, Vikraman (Shammi Thilakan).
Gopinatha Menon (Jagadish), along with his film representative friend Samson (Siddique), get into a fix when a box containing film reels they were carrying gets mixed up with a box containing 40 lakhs in cash. They try to hide their newly found wealth, but have to go on the run after the thugs whose cash they found, come after them. They take refuge with a bar singer, Susan (Chitra), but an act of self-defense results in Susan also tagging along with them.
Elephant lover & ex-mahout Ayyappan Nair (Innocent) finally gets to own his own elephant Sreevidya, by taking out a loan. His plans to make money off Sreevidya, whom he buys from a circus company, back fires however, when it turns out that the elephant doesn't understand any Malayalam, and only Hindi. Ayyappan Nair decides to learn Hindi & gets a private tutor in the form of Vinayachandran (Mukesh). But Vinayachandran's real aim was to get close to Ayyappan Nair's daughter Karthika (Sunitha).
Three struggling friends - Pavithran (Jayaram), a Hindu, Jimmy (Siddique), a Christian & Basheer (Jagathi Sreekumar), a Muslim, separately come to the Thripathoor palace in response to an ad calling for eligible Kshatriya bachelors to be adopted by Rajashekara Varma (Narendra Prasad) & wife Lakshmi (Jayabharati) of Thripathoor. Trying to be the chosen one, they adopt fake Kshatriya names & compete & try to outwit each other, but soon has to contend with a 4th candidate - Seena (Easwari Rao).
Feigning insanity & escaping military duty, Unni (Jayaram) returns home, but afraid of being exposed by his rival neighbor, police constable Kesava Kurup (Siddique), absconds to Cochin with friend Velappan (Jagathi Sreekumar). There, they befriend a wealthy & amiable old lady Seethalakshmi (Kaviyoor Ponnamma), to whom Unni feels a motherly affection. But Seethalakshmi goes missing one day, & they get determined to find her & camp out in the old lady's now-abandoned house.
Kottayam Kunjachan (Mammootty), an infamous thug, gets released from prison & comes to the village of Odankara to rehabilitate, where he befriends Mikhail's (Innocent) family. Kunjachan takes a fancy to Mikhail's daughter Mollykutty (Renjini), but his intentions are misinterpreted & he is ostracized. Then Mikhail & his brother-in-law Korah (Sukumaran) gets killed & the blame falls on Kunjachan.
Mumbai city Police Commissioner David & Home Minister K.G. Menon bring up a small time crook, Kannan Nair (Mohanlal), to compete with the reigning underworld don, Carlose (Rajan P. Dev). Although Kannan initially turns down the offer, when he learns that Carlose was also his father Ayyappan Nair's (Balan K. Nair) killer, he takes up the challenge to bring Carlose down. Starting with Carlose's smuggling & narcotics empire, Kannan starts chipping away at his task with a vengeance.
Durgadathan (Babu Antony) returns to his birth place, from where he & his mother Kannamma (Srividya) were driven away years ago. There, at the Poomangalam palace, he meets Bharatha Varma (M.G. Soman) & his adopted daughter Gayathri (Charmila), who were living there like servants after being cheated out of all their riches by Varma's brother-in-law Rajadeva Varma (N.F. Varghese). Durgadathan gets protective towards Gayathri & later also learns that he is Bharatha Varma's illegitimate son.
In this sequel to 'Mimics Parade (1991)', Jimmy (Asokan) leaves 'Kaladarshana' after a fight & forms his own mimicry troupe 'Yuvadarshana' to compete with Unni (Jagadish), Sabu (Siddique) & Co. Meanwhile, Kasim (Babu Antony), Kasarkode Khaderbai's (Alummoodan) son, arrives from Mumbai to seek revenge against the Kaladarshana artists for sending his father to jail. Seeing as how Kaladarshana's fall would benefit him too, Jimmy offers to help Kasim with his efforts.
Raghavan (Jagathi Sreekumar), an auto rickshaw driver, takes pity on elderly couple Narayanan Nair (Oduvil Unnikrishnan) & Bhageerathi (T.R. Omana), who were neglected by their grown-up children, takes them under his wing & cares for them. However, when Nair gets a real estate windfall, his children show up feigning love & take Nair & his wife away. Raghavan, meanwhile gets branded a kidnapper by Nair's children & gets beset with misfortunes.
Eeshwara Kurup (Janardanan) & a group of orphaned young men, including Balakrishnan (Jagadish), starts a mimicry troupe after their hotel gets shut down. Gopika Varma (Anusha), heiress of the Melepattu Kochukoyickal aristocratic family, joins their troupe as a singer, but with ulterior motives - to hide from the Naaluvettil Kurups who were after her ancestral mansion & to reunite with her long-gone father, who was none other than Kurup himself. Balakrishnan, enamored with Gopika, helps her out.
Ananthapadmanabhan aka Ananthan (Mammootty), a fiercely idealistic doctor, testifies against a wealthy criminal, Idicula Abraham (Devan), who gets out of jail after 7.5 years, vowing to make Ananthan's life hell. Gaining the trust of Dr. Nandakumar (Murali), Ananthan's insecure brother, Idicula gets his own brother, Dr. Renjith Abraham (Sadiq), employed at their family hospital & together, Idicula & Renjith destroys Ananthan's & Nandakumar's harmonious joint-family & their hospital's repute.
Ananthan (Mahesh), the spoiled son of Upendra Kurup (C.I. Paul), bitter over the idea of losing his rich cousin Sreedevi (Vinduja Menon) to Gopalakrishnan (Jagadish), an employee at Sreedevi's dad R.K. Unnithan's (Narendra Prasad) bank, robs the bank & puts the blame on Gopalakrishnan. In a mix-up however, half of that money & jewelry ends up in the hands of a bunch of destitute wannabe drama artists & 4 fishermen & they scramble to hide the money while Kurup & Co. tries to trace them down.
Jimmy Cherian (Babu Antony), a professional boxer, is asked to lose a match so that his competitor Mukherjee Dayal (Nick Mather), a courier for a smuggling ring, could win & go abroad carrying drugs on him. Jimmy refuses, but he is forced to accept defeat & later convicted for manslaughter in a mishap & serves time for 6 years. After getting out, he seeks revenge against crime lord Rajagopalan Thampi (Narendra Prasad), his son Nirmal (Vijay Menon), & Mukherjee, who had also wrecked Jimmy's home.
Miffed at losing a coveted promotion as the area branch manager of Dixi Cola, assistant manager Suresh Kumar (Mukesh) gets drunk with his pals Philipose (Siddique) & Immanuel (Sainuddin), & writes a threatening letter to Suresh's boss Somashekaran Nair (Innocent). However, when it turned out that Suresh was indeed getting that job, they try desperately to get the letter back. To worsen things, Nair gets killed & the letter lands in the hands of the cops, making Suresh & pals the prime suspects.
Pirappancode Prabhakaran (Jayaram) & Pindimana Paulraj (Jagadish), two out of work drama artists, finds themselves in a caper after they try to rescue rich heiress Yamuna (Anusha) who was illegally detained at a mental asylum by its owner Dr. Krishnakumar (Rizabawa), who was seeking revenge against Yamuna for jilting him. To get close to Yamuna, Prabhakaran poses as a madcap himself & gets admitted there, but things don't go per plan when Prabhakaran gets stuck there with no means of escape.
Chanthappan (Narendra Prasad) & Chathukkutty (Nedumudi Venu), two lifelong friends, the former a Kalari artist & the latter a singer, are the prominent individuals of the village, each of them having 5 sons each. Into this walks in beautiful Meera (Annie), their new tenant, causing Chanthappan's & Chathukkutty's sons to fall over each other to get her attention. But Meera later claims to be Chathukkutty's lovechild, throwing Chanthappan, Chathukkutty & their sons into confusion.
Unni (Mukesh), Rajendran (Siddique) & Salim (Sainuddin) were 3 friends who were enjoying the fun of bachelorhood & into their lives walked in Indu (Radha), their new coworker. Unni & Indu fall in love & get married, unbeknownst to their parents, but their plans of living together falls apart when Unni's parents come to visit, with the intention of getting Unni married to his eccentric cousin Minikutty (Kalpana).
A stranger (Jayaram) comes to a village where a father, Madhava Menon (Thilakan), had been waiting for his long-lost son Balan for 15 long years, along with Balan's childhood sweetheart Ashwathy (Kanaka), who had remained unmarried for Balan. The stranger pronounces himself to be Balan & gives Menon & Ashwathy a new lease of life. Days later, when everyone seemed happy, the real Balan (Saikumar) shows up. The stranger was actually Vikraman, a criminal from Mumbai, hiding away from his own gang.
16 years after their son Rajan (Suresh Gopi) is forced to leave home for the US, Rajasekharan Thampi (Nedumudi Venu) & his wife Subadra (Bharathi) still pine for his return. When Thampi's 60th birthday comes up, & Rajan's daughter Raji (Meena) shows up as an unexpected guest, Thampi puts up a facade of unpleasantness, but later gives in & warms up to Raji. Now Thampi & Subadra also prepare to meet their son Rajan, but Raji carries a heavy secret in her heart - that her parents are no more.
Kesavan Kutty (Sreenivasan), a contractor who was in charge of building 3 houses in Ernakulam for Georgekutty (Murali), an expat in the US, is forced to rent them out without Georgekutty's knowledge, to raise some cash to repay a debt, & chaos ensue after the tenants from different cultural backgrounds clash with each other. Then Georgekutty unexpectedly plans a visit & Kesavan Kutty is forced to try & get the tenants to leave on short notice.
4 brothers, known as "Hitler Brothers", dote on their niece Nandini (Vanitha Vijayakumar) & plan her marriage to Dr. Gopan (Vijayakumar). Gopan asks for their house in the city which was rented out as a police station, as dowry, & the Hitler Brothers task lawyer Manmathan (Jagathi), with it. However, Manmathan falls in love with Nandini & procrastinates. Meanwhile, Nandini learns of Gopan's true self & falls in love with the Sub-Inspector of that same police station, Sundaran (Premkumar).
Kuttiraman (Premkumar) returns from the Middle East with dreams of marrying the girl of his dreams, Sumathi (Mohini), & with promises of visas for his friends. Sumathi's uncle Sreedharan (Rajan P. Dev) is opposed to the alliance, as he plans to get Sumathi married to his own junkie son Sethukrishnan (Vijayakumar). However, just as Kuttiraman manages to woo Sumathi, he gets visitors from Mumbai who are after some smuggled gold Kuttiraman was carrying.
Kuttikrishnan (Jagadish), the illicit son of businessman Ananthan Nambiar, comes to Kochi to meet his dad, but a mix-up leaves him on the streets & another young man, Balagopalan (Mukesh), in his place as Nambiar's son. To expose Balagopalan, Kuttikrishnan teams up with cutpurse Mukundan (Jagathi) & car-thief Meenakshi (Annie), both of whom ensconce themselves in Nambiar's house as Kuttikrishnan's relatives. Meanwhile, Nambiar's manager Krishnadas was plotting to usurp Nambiar's assets.
Varikkuzhiyil Asokan Nair (Mukesh), an unemployed man struggling to support a large extended family, gets a lifeline when he hears that a long-lost uncle who had run off decades ago & who had made it big in Maduranthakam, Tamil Nadu had expressed a desire to get his daughter Rajavalli married to Asokan, before he passed away. Asokan & his family arrives in Maduranthakam only to find that Rajavalli was self-centric & arrogant & Asokan takes a fancy to Rajavalli's demure maid, Sreedevi (Mathu).
4 pals & neighbors - Jijo, Tinku, Kannan & Shahul (Vimal) - are the mischief-makers at school. Into their midst walks in their new neighbor & music teacher at school, Nirmala S. Menon (Shweta Menon), to whom they take a fancy to. Nirmala & they bond & she becomes part of the gang. However, the boys are angered when Nirmala gets close to architect Jeevan Roy (Suresh Gopi), principal Fr. Bhavanious's (Innocent) protégé. They try to teach Jeevan a lesson, which results in Jeevan's tragic death.
Ramanunni (Mukesh), who was whiling his life away with sports & games, is forced to take up his dad Veeran Nair's (Krishnan Kutty Nair) job of that of a chauffeur at the Chittedam house. There, he falls for the bubbly Aarathi Menon (Madhoo), the darling of the Chittedam family. Ramanunni mistakes Aarathi's overtures as love & falls hard for her, but is rudely awakened when city police commissioner & Aarathi's fiancé Jinachandran (Siddique) shows up & Aarathi admits that she was messing with him.
Annamma (Padmini), an elderly grandmother, gets a chance to come to the US to visit her two sons Jose (Lalu Alex) & Alex (Mukesh), who were settled in the US. After reaching the US, however, the initial euphoria soon wears off for Annamma when she realizes that she is not able to accept the American culture & watches the turmoil in her sons' families as they fight over money & her grandchildren go astray.
In pre-indepedent India, Sivasubramania Iyer (Mohanlal), a revolutionary young Brahmin man, goes against the social norms & becomes a communist to fight for the downtrodden workers. Urumees Tharakan (Suresh Gopi), a rich man's son on his way to a lucrative government career, drops everything & joins him. Together, they take on the Diwan (Nasser) & the very concept of the Diwan rule.
Married couple & coworkers Mohan (Jayaram) & Yamuna (Urvashi) separate while Yamuna was pregnant, because Yamuna wouldn't forgive a one-night stand Mohan had with her friend. Years later, they run into each other at a new workplace, & Mohan, realizing he still had feelings for her, tries to get her back, but Yamuna spurns his advances.
