Southern France, the present. About to marry, Charles Leblanc glimpses beautiful Stascha with her autocratic older companion, Karoff. They meet shortly after on a train. Stascha confesses she and Karoff murdered her husband, and asks for his help to escape from Karoff. She introduces Leblanc as her cousin, and the three go to an alpine hotel for a frantic New Year's eve party. The police arrive next morning. Karoff draws a gun and kills Stascha, leaving a distraught Leblanc cradling her body. (imdb)

This made-for-television film constituted Bergman's first production of Strindberg's A Dreamplay - a play he would revisit three times more. On the anniversary of Strindberg's birth, Swedish television theatre presented his chamber play Oväder, directed by Bergman. The production, which was also transmitted to Denmark and Norway, received mostly rave reviews and consolidated Bergman's standing as an outstanding television director. He was praised for his tact and sympathy in depicting old age, for his superior lighting and fine camera work and for his understanding of the intimacy of the TV medium through his use of close-ups.
