"Visually beautiful but I was never a fan of "mise en abîme"/"film about a film" in cinema (i.e. 8½, La Nuit américaine): a heavy-handed device IMO. This is the case here, too. Besides, Center Stage feels slow because of a lack of plot points despite the tumultuous time period of the main tale. Too much faithfulness to Ruan Lingyu's real life? Similar to Rouge that was shorter and more emotionally involving. Ultimately it felt like In the Mood for Love for me: pretty but nothing to grab"
