"Aside from single-handedly popularizing karate in the western hemisphere, the popcultural impact this movie made cannot be stressed enough. Numerous martial arts flics after 84 would not have been produced if it wasn't for The Karate Kid. Also it caused thousands of dojos being opened in the 80s. A major misconception with the audience is part of an ongoing debate: Of course, Zabka is the real star of this movie. And the only reason to watch it. Macchio as its whiny-voiced lead is unbearable."
