An exceptional film centering on an exceptional raw performance from its central character, a 19-year-old French Arabic prisoner played by Tahar Rahim. Watch out for this young actor! He carries the film like a veteran. The supporting cast are all top-notch too and the atmosphere created is realistic and brutal. Despite running 2.5 hours, the film is enthralling and feels shorter. My only complaint is that Malik's dreams and ambitions for life after his prison term were not explored at all.

Nothing in it is particularly surprising or new, but it's an uncommonly well-made, well-acted and involving prison / crime saga. It's two and a half hours long and I still wanted more when the credits started rolling. I'd love to see a sequel. (Hey, if Godfather II worked, I don't see why Prophet II couldn't.) Definitely was robbed of Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. My only complaint: the bright white subtitles that frequently got washed out against the background. Unacceptable.

Intense scenes abound in this prison film meets gangster film. The supernatural elements I didn't need; the same goes for the Ryad subplot. Also, some of the reasoning was peculiar (e.g., why would Cesar put Malik on a plane when he could make a phone call etc.) and the titular concept of Malik as a prophet virtually unexplored. Too bad the movie isn't tighter - Arestrup and Rahim are wonderful, really.

I made the mistake of watching this the day after the superior, sharper and thematically similar Danish prison movie 'R'. In comparison 'A Prophet' feels less real, just a tad staged in the latter half and somewhat over-forced dramatically. And way too long. Definitely still a forceful and original coming of age-story driven by frighteningly well-acted performances - but not quite the truly captivating masterpiece I expected.

Raw and compelling portrait of prison life, with the occasional dash of the surreal. Feels a bit on the long side, with a strong first act followed by an overlong second one without converging in a cathartic climax. The direction is strong, though, and Rahim commands the screen.

I'm disconcerted when a new film engages me as one of the all-time greats. Un prophète deserves every bit. Audiard crafted a film not only visceral, emotional and challenging, but entertaining (in the broadest sense; I am entertained by all good film). Malik is a stunning character put forth by a stunning performance, a character that simultaneously disgusts with despicable malice and inspires with bravery, perseverance and vulnerability. I felt for Malik, and confusingly so. Required viewing.

A really great prison drama, I don't know why but it reminded me of In the Name of Father even though they have nothing to do with each other. Didn't get bored for a second through the 150 mins, so i guess it's good right? The acting and directing was great.

Overall Enjoyment: 25/40, Plot/Themes: 10/20, Cinematography/Direction: 10/20, Acting/Writing: 10/20 An interesting if not somewhat predictable film. The characters are fine and the plot is good, but the story has been told before and nothing that happens is really very surprising. An engaging watch, but I don't really feel the need to see it again.

Something about the incredulous, continuous series of fortuitous events for the protagonist undercut the otherwise reality-focussed edge to the film. Some of the symbolic 'ghost' stuff seemed a bit stupid, as did the titles that transparently aimed to jolt you out of immersion. Very good atmosphere and well played out introduction to a character unsettled by the threat of prison.... but a long way from 'great'.

French mafia drama set in a prison. Echoes both 70s New Hollywood and French realism, which is to say it looks good, takes its time (perhaps a little too much time at 150 minutes), delivers solid characters and doesn't rub your face in a moral at the end. Quite lovely.

This is an extremely well done film, and I'm giving it a high score for a good reason (acting, editing, directing, story) but there was still something about this movie, a sort of emotionally detached feeling and the sense that the story was just kind of trodding along without consequence. I suppose if Rahim had showed more emotion it might've worked better, but the most I remember was him killing Reyeb and when he finally gets out, he felt too stiff I think. Otherwise this is a fine film.

Gripping and insightful character study manages a difficult balancing act of depicting the gradual hardening of Rahim's "innocent" into a brutal kingpin, set against the relentless, never ending tediousness of life as a long term prisoner. Beautifully performed by all, with a mesmerising supporting part for Arestrup as the by turns repulsive and irresistible prison crime lord. A galvanising and hypnotic experience, which arguably loses some of its power when it ventures outside the prison gates.

Successful both as genre entertainment and as arthouse introspection. It not only creates a world of gritty realism but also elevates it to something higher, both more engaging than the dreary Gommorah and more nourishing than something full of energy, style and confidence but lacking in soul like Goodfellas. Repulsively violent, containing excellent magical realism touches (the deer!) and with a great relationship, founded on two terrific performances, at the heart of it this is a great film.

A fine prison film. Tahar Rahim plays Malik with the same caring intensity as a French Tom Hardy, and everyone else gives equally noteworthy performances. But the film seems to be constantly circling some kind of greater subtext or moral it never quite commits to - lost somewhere between religion, mysticism, race and the political infrastructure - which means it feels simply like a superior drama, not a masterpiece of film design.

This movie is as genuinely hard and gritty as they come, and not as a matter of mere affectation. The characters are fully seasoned and extremely believable, courtesy of some great performances (particularly Rahim in the lead and Niels Arestrup as the intimidating Cesar). The plot is nice and complex, but without being difficult to follow, and traces Malik's continuing descent into the criminal underworld brilliantly. There's really nothing not to like here.

it probably works best as a narrative, because once we try and uncover the meaning of various things, in particular the purpose of the prophet, it comes apart a little bit. this isn't to say it's without merit - far from it - as it is a largely riveting tale of a man's 6-year stay in prison, and the complex rivalry that exists there, though the whole presentation does seem a bit overplayed and unrealistic.

Audiard's fancy camera and music mannerisms are as trashy and superfluous as a Michael Mann movie: using "Mack the Knife" as a theme doesn't match Brecht but reveals Audiard's essential lack of interest in Malik's culture.

Audiard's latest is a genuine masterpiece: a 2,5h epic about the rise of a small-time crook thrown in a prison system marked by ethnic and cultural diversity. The protagonist arrives as a 19-year-old teen, convicted of beating up some cops, but as time goes by he manages to rise in the prison hierarchy. He receives appreciation and admiration, but it all comes at a price: the face of the man he has killed keeps haunting him.

The best french film i have ever seen, and its even better as the actors aren’t even french. The films does lack in soundtrack, but the lack of makes it even more colourless and black and white which makes the theme and genre really come out of its shell further. It is the most believable and ascending story of a man who had nothing gains everything. Shining shit to gold even if the gold was stolen instead of being mined

This movie is a very well done movie based on prison life, something that is close to matching the Shawshank Redemption. The movie is engaging all throughout and builds each character very well. The acting be everyone of the cast is really good. Some people feel that movie is a bit long, but in my opinion there is not one minute that has been wasted. The movie is backed with a very good background score. A must see for one and all.

The storyline seems all 2 real as we follow the "prophet" (in an Oscar-worthy performance) as he's clearly forced in2 many a nightmarish corner. What separates this from being "just" a hugely powerful argument for prison reform is the paradox that runs throughout the first 2 hours of the film, where the more he achieves the less options he seems to have, turning even days-on-leave in2 a series of loathsome tasks. The denoument leaves2 much extrapolation2 the viewer but it's clear where it counts

Yet another gangster biopic, although the shorter time-span of the plot (a prison sentence) is welcome, as is the focus it lends the location. Disappointingly, the "gritty realism" is diluted by the usual stock cliches and prison life isn't quite like this.

Wow, just wow... I haven't watched such an effortlessly realistic movie for a long long time. It is engorging, with unreal acting; so good that it feels like a reality show (hats off to Arestrup and Rahim particularly). It has such a tight and wonderful script on top of that. Particularly Reyeb, the guilty conscience as a criminal consultant trick (with smokes coming out of the cuts and all) is a masterstroke. Best prison story I have seen since OZ.

Totally absorbing prison drama. It manages to be both gritty and moving without any form of sentimental or sensationalistic compromise. Also, it is a thoroughly engaging and uncommonly interesting character study. I would have given it a perfect score but I can't shake off the fact that the second half of the film became a little too convoluted and at times, confusing and improbable. There is something about prisons that makes them perfect as film settings, maybe it's the confined location, the desperation, every feeling seems increased in intensity. This is one of the best in the sub-genre, blending in some gangster subplots. The gripping main plot with a coming of age-story IS very (maybe too) long, but intense scenes abound, great acting, and the detailed, facetted filmmaking makes you tentative to every shot and every word.

A great prison drama about identity under oppression with a tight but nuanced structure & a stellar lead performance. Reminded me a bit of Cronenberg's later work not least for the visceral impact it often goes for. You could argue that the whole metaphysical layer is vague, shallow & pretentious but I honestly found it a refreshing & natural extension of the drama as it related to the main character's psychological & spiritual transformation. Depressing yet also weirdly uplifting piece of work.

I think I'm racist against mustaches, but I spent the entire movie thinking about Godfather Part II. That's a good thing, though. Agree with some of the criticisms about this film. The "prophet" theme is not well developed and doesn't go anywhere. I would have liked to have seen it taken out. A few sublime touches elevate this beyond standard prison food-chain fare. El Djebena's little escapes, mental and physical, reveal the innocence and enchantment taken from him with incarceration. Unfortunately the length of his imprisonment dilutes the experience, necessitating weaker structural elements like the montage sequences and chapter titles, and the characters fail to hold interest all the way through. But the brilliance of individual moments ("Animals are coming!") is never oversold.

Proof that a film doesn't need flashy cinematography or manic editing to be thoroughly engrossing. It stands entirely on the characters, the story and the acting, as well as the thematic explorations of criminality, corruption, religion, redemption, identity - not to mention a bit of mysticism thrown in for good measure.
