65 30% | Gladiator 2 (2024) - Rated 05 Dec 2024
"It has the melodramatic camp and comedy straddling the line of intentionality that I've come to expect from late era Ridley Scott. (House of Gucci, Napoleon) but more so than those films, this one feels sloppy. The editing is unfocused and imprecise, many of the settings lack detail and the anachronisms are just stupid. A newspaper? Come on..."

90 84% | Hundreds of Beavers (2024) - Rated 02 Dec 2024
"Interpolates such a wide swath of pop culture so creatively. It's a mix of Legend of Zelda, Benny Hill, Looney Tunes and Adult Swim in a Revenant setting. It's quite the accomplishment in how far it stretches It's self imposed limitations, evolving the stakes and setting as the movie goes on AND how it incorporates so many influences without feeling derivative."

84 68% | Gosford Park (2001) - Rated 30 Nov 2024
"Takes a while to get into gear given the heavy lifting required with such a large cast, but once more about the characters is revealed, the story comes into a startling focus. The axes of dependency and their parallels are fascinating. Great stuff from Altman"

85 71% | Conclave (2024) - Rated 07 Nov 2024
"It's a fun, fast paced, thriller with many twists and turns, resplendent sets and cinematography and cattiness befitting a high school cafeteria. The linking of faith and doubt serves as a potent theme throughout resolved profoundly in the movies final moments, presenting a glimmer of optimism amidst the dark reactionary undercurrents plaguing the catholic church and our modern world"

80 60% | Anora (2024) - Rated 31 Oct 2024
"Handles it's tonal shifts masterfully as well as painting a vibrant picture of these misfits and neerdowells that occupy the parts of New York so easily forgotten about. The handlers of the juvenile male lead really stood out. The main character's accent and combative demeanor annoyed me. It was appropriate in the film, it just irritated me so I personally can't rate it higher than an 80."

58 19% | Rumours (2024) - Rated 29 Oct 2024
"Does not progress past the initial humor of its premise instead repeating itself through droll transgressions at the expense of character development. The ending however was a good punchline to this shaggy dog joke of a movie"

92 88% | Walker (1987) - Rated 22 Oct 2024
"A darkly hilarious scathing critique of US imperialism in Central America that masterfully deploys anachronism to tie past to the present. Accuracy be damned, this stirring polemic lays bare the ugly hypocrisy and brutal core of manifest destiny with the conclusion that the impulse never faded in the American psyche, it just matured. Harris is fantastic as are the rest of the supporting cast, bursting at the seams with character, typical of an Alex Cox film"

70 37% | The Fog (1980) - Rated 21 Oct 2024
"Tone is great as is the history of the town and the ghouls seeking retribution but once the reveals stop, we're left with an underwhelming climax"

75 47% | The Apprentice (2024) - Rated 16 Oct 2024
"Captivating if not revalatory look into Donald Trumps life and relationship with Roy Cohn. Sebastian Stan's Trump, which he masterfully dissappears into, is portrayed pretty fairly before some scenes towards the end devolve into an amusing yet washed out spoof."

70 37% | Death Becomes Her (1992) - Rated 08 Oct 2024
"Entertaining camp with some transcendent special effects and strong comedic performances from all three leads. Not much more than that, but it's already plenty"
