78 55% Hardcore (1979) - Rated 15 Jun 2024
"George C. Scott is in rare form as a religious, emotionally constipated but kindhearted individual descending into the seedy coastal underworld of pornography. He's able to summon a divine rage and determination which gives him a really commanding presence onscreen despite his smaller, older frame. The stark contrast of worldviews opens up interesting religious themes, but the end falls a little flat. Probably needed a scene or two more of denouement with the daughter."
58 20% Bad Lieutenant (1992) - Rated 09 Jun 2024
"A strong, deranged performance by Keitel and some immersive cinematography can't overcome the ponderous dialogue, superficial explorations of faith and diminishing returns from seeing Keitel snort coke, drink and smoke crack"
85 71% Blow Out (1981) - Rated 03 Jun 2024
"Clever premise that builds tension and stakes until the explosive third act. Full of great performances from the supporting cast. Franz is comically sleazy and Lithgow is about as psychopathic as it can get. The third act, conclusion and denouement are gripping, startling and a little sickening. Really enjoyed it."
60 22% Hit Man (2024) - Rated 03 Jun 2024
"Really don't care for Linklaters glib philosophical warbling and that's an unfortunate part of the narrative here. All characters other than the two leads have canceled-after-one-season level dialogue and delivery. Powell is charismatic and funny enough to carry this movie barely above the line of mediocrity"
95 93% Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) - Rated 31 May 2024
"Incredible action, every inch of the world has a backstory that could fill an entire other movie. But beyond its spectacle, the movie is a mythic parable of the psychic cost of suffering that is landed emphatically with the final scene. Chris Hemsworth needs prosthetics and a silly voice more often."
85 71% The French Connection (1971) - Rated 28 May 2024
"Incredible depiction of pursuit. The camera zooms, focus shifts and shakiness during chases create that effect masterfully."
75 47% Snake Eyes (1998) - Rated 28 May 2024
"Cage is at his sleaziest and zaniest here in a well directed thriller that burns through all of its intrigue in the first 3/4's of the film. The ending is a dud but the first hour entertains. Hard to imagine anyone but Cage leading this movie"
77 52% Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) - Rated 17 May 2024
"Incredibly detailed and robust world building that suggests a rich world outside of what's shown onscreen. Paired with a compelling villain and nuanced themes about interpretations of mythology leave a thoroughly entertaining film. Some of the dialogue is rough and their linguistic hang ups are inconsistently applied, to the detriment of the main character especially"
75 47% War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) - Rated 13 May 2024
"It's surprisingly slow and contemplative with much less war than the title would suggest. The story stalls the most during the apes internment as few other than Ceaser have the gravitase needed to anchor sequences. The world building is incredible detailed and robust"
80 60% The Fall Guy (2024) - Rated 07 May 2024
"A delightful light hearted romp that takes nothing seriously other than the extent stunt performers go to entertain us. Ryan Gosling is too funny not to be featured in comedies more often."
