"Marlene Dietrich is a goddess and the post-Expressionist set design is top-notch. At points it feels like a lighter, more romantic, Hollywoodified Ivan the Terrible, what with the court intrigue and mise-en-scene and all. I admit that I was rather disappointed that the film ended when it did; another hour or so of Catherine doing her thing would have allowed for some interesting developments, and as a whole it does feel a little slight. Still, a very good last gasp for pre-Code Hollywood."
