Our Hospitality
Our Hospitality (1923) - Rated 19 Sep 2026
There's a humour in these old silent films that we don't have in more contemporary films, a sort of cartoonish slapstick farce feel to them that I quite enjoy. I enjoyed the dog running alongside the train, the wonky train tracks, the tunnel shapped to fit the train chimney etc. Its to do with making up for the script? I found this a good fun laugh anyway and would certainly recommend it to fans of silent films, esp. Buster Keaton fans. Worth a watch (also the musical score was nice and jaunty).

The Love that Remains (2025) - Rated 30 Aug 2026
Lovely - a quirky, amusing watch which is quite thoughtful, poignant and features some quite stunning cinematography. I love how subtle this film is at times, while at other times, the dialogue isn't exactly for the overly prude or squeamish - kids eh? a good bit of quirky world cinema I'd definitely recommend.

Io Capitano

This is a sobering, thoughtful and visually impressive film. I really enjoyed the aerial shots highlighting the isolation the refugees have while trudging through the desert. There are at times a dreamlike element to the plotline, as seen from the film poster displayed on some sites. This helped put the plight of refugees in a clearer, quite emotive and humanist light.

Project Hail Mary
Project Hail Mary (2026) - Rated 05 Jul 2026
This is a bit of a hug of a film, to me as an introvert and HSP (highly sensitive person). I love these sort of sci-fi films where it revolves around a solitary person/figure in space having to come to terms with their isolation and relive memories of their time on Earth from afar. Its poignant and perhaps even thought provoking. I don't review films often at all these days but I did enjoy this very much - I particularly liked the cinematography, the visuals and the musical score. Recommended.

Lucky Grandma
Lucky Grandma (2019) - Rated 30 Aug 2026
Wacky, quirky, action packed and funny - a nice short and sweet, genuinely entertaining film that seems to have burst out of the pages of a comic book or graphic novel almost. Very enjoyable. Certainly not to be taken too seriously. Also it may be set in NYC but its primarily Asian languages spoke throughout, so bear that in mind, if subtitles bother you. I loved it.

L.A. Confidential (1997) - Rated 23 Aug 2026
Nice to see a fresh faced Russell Crowe. This is a decent film, not massively brilliant but its solid enough I guess. Great casting, a nice sense of period style and borderline gripping. I've seen better films, I've seen worse.

Dogma (1999) - Rated 30 Aug 2026
Pure religious satire - amusing (in a dark way, of course), very quirky, somewhat cartoon-y in the character depictions, with interesting early performances from Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, plus some really entertaining scenes with the late Alan Rickman. I cringed at times, I laughed at other times. It has quite a 'Coen brothers' film feel to it. Recommended.

Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai
Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (2011) - Rated 05 Sep 2026
This film is somewhat poingant and intense at times but not constant - some scenes may be regarded as frustratingly slow paced for some, the viewer watching from the background, like a curiously observant ghost. Very quiet in such times, I imagine you could hear a pin drop a mile off - quite engrossing, with some sobering, thoughtful dialogue. Its got a hint of the historical Kill Bill's about it. This film may get your senses on edge. An edgy, authority challenging film about societal norms.

Evil Does Not Exist
Evil Does Not Exist (2024) - Rated 06 Sep 2026
This features quite morose, foreboding, classical/instrumental music which really adds to the sense of isolation. Its probably not what you think - its not an all out action/thriller or a horror film. Its quite slow plot wise but its pretty atmospheric at times and I found it surprisingly watchable given how mundane some scenes are when you think about it. A good example of world cinema, I'd recommend this for fans of contemporary Asian films.
