this is a fascinating film in that you can't tell if its pro or anti conversion therapy... or anything. it seems scared of its own premise, focus grouped into oblivion. the main characters don't even feel like characters. just frightened by its own shadow

at its best points, it feels like a synecdoche NY, Maniac(2018) sort of jaunt. at it's worst, it's a preachy late 2010s-2020 protest era anachronism. As a whole, it feels like the star wars sequels but for "sorry to bother you", in a derogatory way. The early to mid film surrealism is charming, the third act is... not.

I have a soft spot for this film honestly, just because of how *gay* it is. This is genuinely gayer than a lot of "queer" media now. a significant chunk of the movie is just sweaty men waggling eyebrows at eachother from inches away, and hard-ons are mentioned multiple times. It was regarded this way on its release as well, and i feel like its historically significant for that.
