Bio: I\'ve been a one-man Tour de France, lugging commando Leicas; I\'ve played the roulette of stormy waves, hauling stripers onto rocks; I\'ve taught first graders to freeze each other mid-air, in action portraits; I actively seek poetic Zen, whether with camera, tablet or pen. My cat lived fast (9 lives, 20 years), and my rueful Cheshire grin moves ever more slowly.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - Rated 14 Oct 2014
Director and stars reprise their parts in another Batman smash!!

Blood Simple (1984) - Rated 14 Oct 2014
The astringency of a hard-boiled noir dances wildly with frames composed in heaven. Visuals that taser our cliches are nonetheless fashioned to serve the twisty plot. The Coens' first feature, it showcases the black humor that will only be refined.

The Hurt Locker (2009) - Rated 14 Oct 2014
Where I was initially seduced by Avatar's stunning cg, subsequent viewings of this film have only increased its standing in my eyes. Renner and Mackie do their best work, but there are several stars who play doomed cameos that are far more emotional than most such roles. One critic called this a perfect film, and it's pretty hard to argue.

The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996) - Rated 14 Oct 2014
Playboy crafted a highbrow libertine brand, but Hustler trumpeted its tastelessness. I was prepared to dismiss this film, but its performances and themes demand attention. Slimeballs have the same rights as we honest citizens; start substituting for slimeballs, you understand why.

Mystic River (2003) - Rated 14 Oct 2014
Actors implode, explode, and simply take the facts, as the ripples of unholy water in childhood baptize grown pals in blood. Penn's explosions, perfectly matched to Robbins' implosions, create such a powerful tragedy that one's own childhood secrets begin rattling their cages. And the mystic river of time baptizes all, killer victims, and avenging scum.

American Beauty (1999) - Rated 14 Oct 2014
As Speilberg called it, a classic film, despite the initial self-doubts of former tv director Sam Mendes. Stands with Ordinary People (and that Welles guy) as an amazing debut.

That Thing You Do! (1996) - Rated 14 Oct 2014
A nice evocation of a struggling 60's band, and the interpersonal forces that shape it. Title tune isn't as catchy as, for example, the toe-tapping rap of Hustle and Flow, but it suffices.

Shaun of the Dead (2004) - Rated 14 Oct 2014
Very funny, with sendups of various foibles scoring consistently.

The Hunt for Red October (1990) - Rated 14 Oct 2014
Arguably Clancy's best Jack Ryan plot, featuring great work by Connery, Baldwin, Sam Neill, Scott Glenn, Stellan Skaarsgard, and others, this taut tangle of deceits is tremendously satisfying, from goofy domestic scene to the end of the world, a mile under the Atlantic.

Cool Hand Luke (1967) - Rated 14 Oct 2014
A prison farm escapee is shot like a dog, allowed to bleed out; as the camera pulls up and back from the prison yard, George Kennedy marvels, "that Luke, he sure was a world beater!" DISGUSTING!, says a nearby viewer. Yet this celebration of futile charisma shows us that, whether it's eating 50 eggs, or fighting a man you can't beat, or betting on nothing ("sometimes, nothing is a cool hand"), it's better to screw the heads off parking meters, than to park your butt for life.
