"Very frustrating remake has all the right ingredients on paper – every cast member without exception would appear to be a fine choice (especially if making a more literal adaptation of the novel), and the production values are of a high standard – it just fumbles badly in finding a reason for being, doing a bland rehash of De Palma’s original with some awkward touches to try and make it feel “modern” (why did the pig’s blood scene also require a YouTube video to accompany it?) It’s"

An Affair to Remember (1957) - Rated 05 Sep 2025
"The combined good will of Grant and Kerr pulls this lavish and soapy melodrama over some rocky terrain, with a first half that works very well as the two leads wearily circle one another (the moment of passion captured from the neck down is almost unbearably cute), and the whole sequence with a scene-stealing Nesbitt is worth the price of admission alone. It is unfortunate that the pacing in the second half slows to a crawl, and is awkwardly structured to contrive phony suspense, eventually lead"

"A Disney film, but not a Disney film – in a lateral way, this reminds me of NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN, in that it is a reaction against a very successful franchise/company, but basically just apes its inspiration rather well, as opposed to trying anything new (and I suppose in this analogy, Lansbury would be Connery?) The result is a sometimes odd, but entertaining adventure saga which ironically works better if you consider it in the context of Disney’s 90s Renaissance. Rests on the beautiful w"

"Harmlessly silly meeting of the sensibilities of ALIEN and ANIMAL HOUSE is a pretty tepid example of both, with an undistinguished cast not able to bring too much life to proceedings (with the comparable exception of Karen, who can play this sort of corrupt official in his sleep). Bland, dull and forgettable, but not the absolute travesty its reputation suggests."

Blind Spot: Hitler's Secretary (2002) - Rated 05 Sep 2025
"While I’d argue it barely qualifies as a documentary (or even a “movie” in the typical sense), what amounts to a simple extended interview becomes as riveting as any other WWII documentary or feature film largely thanks to the deceptive power and pull of Junge’s skills as a raconteur. I’ve yet to embark on SHOAH, but the complete lack of any supporting archival footage makes this even more powerful – we are trapped with Junge and her vivid words and descriptions to create the mental "

Future War (1997) - Rated 05 Sep 2025
"It’s possibly a result of too much absolute dreck in close proximity, but outside of one rather incredible fight in the… box factory?, this is a dull and tedious slog without much respite – mixing elements of TERMINATOR and JURASSIC PARK (love those exploding dinosaurs!) and with some peculiar religious elements thrown into the mix, this is more tired and confusing than entertaining on any level. It is something of a credit to what you can attempt to do with a little forced perspective!"

Return to Neverland (2002) - Rated 05 Sep 2025
"If you have to indulge in a completely unnecessary sequel that seems destined to be played on repeat on home video, you could do a lot worse and checking my notes for the original PETER PAN, I think I appreciate this sequel more, even though I’m not sure either film manages to capture a Neverland that is especially appealing to visit (my vote might still go to the contentious HOOK). As a bouncy and colourful distraction, it’s fine, though a lack of development makes it unmemorable and redund"

The Thirteenth Floor (1999) - Rated 05 Sep 2025
"Noirish meeting of elements of DARK CITY and THE MATRIX isn’t as visionary as those two films, and has an easily guessable “twist” if you’re even halfway paying attention, but Rusnak’s handling of the different time periods is first rate, balancing an authentically hyper-real vision of the 1930s without ever feeling strained or spoofy. Fine performances by a well-chosen cast help – Bierko is doggedly bland as the role requires, but colouring by supporting players Haysbert, Mueller-St"

Black and White (1999) - Rated 31 Aug 2025
"If it doesn't quite come together, and Toback's Altman-ish hopscotching through his character's lives proves that no-one does this like the master, there's still a great deal to enjoy here, mostly thanks to Toback's great eye for casting, bringing together the oddest combinations and grouping of actors and letting their combined, surprisingly potent energy carry the film during some truly awkward careens. Feels too much like a stunt to have any hope of saying anything truly profound, but does of"

Black Christmas (2006) - Rated 31 Aug 2025
"Surprisingly well-done and gripping remake is unafraid to take big swings into gleeful nastiness, and gets away with it on the strength of its convictions, and a cast who know exactly how to play this seedy and sleazy material for all its worth (especially an amusingly cast Martin). I guess its worth being aware that this is full-bore, Bush-era torture porn that is merciless in its delivery and execution, but keeps swinging home run after home run with such energy that it becomes modestly diffic"
