95 83% The Beastmaster (1982) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"This and Conan are the best of the genre. The score is beautiful, Singer makes a great hero, the animals are splendid, and Tanya Roberts is a wonderful slave princess. Any questions?"
90 50% Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"I think this was the start of Kubrick's long streak of brilliance. Also, this is Peter Sellers at one of his peaks. He makes "Lolita" the half-brilliant film it is, but here he gives Character Work a whole new name."
75 12% Our Man Flint (1966) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"Fun, but "In Like Flint" is so much better. Still, this is great 60's-ness complete with hilarious dialogue between Coburn and Cobb."
88 37% Taxi Driver (1976) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"This is definitely Scorsese's crowning achievement. He needs to go back to his taxi driving roots to make stellar films today. The disturbance factor is terrific and the score is great, especially if you're all ready feeling heartbroken and violently insane all at once."
72 4% You Only Live Twice (1967) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"You can tell Sean has grown tired of Bond in his fifth time round, even when he gets to say the words "Little Nellie" and ride it as well. Roald Dhal, of all people, bless his heart! wrote the screenplay. It's hilarious to hear Sean ooze out very Anglo pronunciations of his Japanese girlfriends, but there is a line where someone verifies with 007 that his drink of choice is "Vodka martini, stirred not shaken." That's dyslexic and blasphemous!"
91 62% Fantastic Planet (1973) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"Total psychadelic wonder. Amazing score and harrowing situations, and highly original. Plus, our hero is voiced by Barry Bostwick, I mean c'mon!"
94 70% The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"This is Peckinpah's gentlest and I'd say my fourth favorite. The love between Robards and Stevens is so real and strong. It's all quite a funny and beautiful story. The best is the montage scene with the "Butterfly Mornings" song both the actors sing."
100 95% Midnight Express (1978) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"I was 19, renting film after film to culture myself cinematically, and my mom of all people recommended this to me. I didn't know how I would like it, and I had a feeling, by its cover and storyline, that it was going to be very difficult to watch. Folks, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen, and it was a measly laptop screen at that! This is my favorite film to date. The story is mind-blowing, the performances are heartbreaking and inspiring, the script is seething with passion, the dir"
86 29% Rocky (1976) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"In Cinderella Man, I was just waiting for Russell Crowe to win the final match and the credits to roll. EVERYBODY knows what happens in Rocky, and yet you're always glued to your seat, wishing the best for Rocky and rooting him on. This is an extremely tender movie too, and I wish Hollywood took ol' Sly more seriously, for he truly had the makings of being a staple dramatic actor. It was up between Sly and Peter Finch in winning that Oscar, and though Finch's performance was terrific, I almos"
82 20% The Elephant Man (1980) - Rated 14 Aug 2007
"I love David Lynch's work. This is one of his lesser surreal/bizarre films, but I think it's because the essence of the title character is outlandish enough. John Hurt (Midnight Express) is fantastic as the real-life John Merrick, and brings supple and pleasant humanity to a man who is treated often as an animal. Anthony Hopkins of all people is in this one too! By no means is this one of Lynch's lesser works, but I would recommend more "Blue Velvet" or "Lost Highway"."
