80 18% Live Free or Die Hard (2007)
"The best film directed by Len Wiseman, though that's saying very little. As fun as it is to watch Willis/McClane aging gracefully, and as compelling as the analog-McClane-vs.-digital-terrorism conceit is, there's a certain lifelessness to the proceedings - Wiseman manages to make the work of about fifty stuntpeople feel as bloodless and uninvolving as CGI. Mary Elizabeth Winstead livens things up as McClane's estranged (but chip-off-the-old-block) daughter."
90 64% The Blues Brothers (1980)
"Fine musical sequences, great Belushi/Aykroyd rapport, all gently delivered by director John Landis. And the chase scene in the final reel is just glorious."
100 96% Persona (1966)
"Powerful in form and content, at once one of Bergman's most berserk experiments and one of his most emotionally focused films. A film to revisit."
95 86% Dawn of the Dead (1978)
"Still unsettling and hilarious almost thirty years on. As dated as it may be visually, it still FEELS like the end of the world - we watch the different systems break down, watch the worst in people emerge as this doomsday scenario plays out. And then it turns into a rich satire on American materialism, a complete 180 in terms of tone but somehow completely consistent with what came before."
75 10% The Faculty (1998)
"Amusing trifle from Rodriguez. It's slight, but compulsively watchable."
90 64% The Birds (1963)
"Grows more fascinating with each viewing - the second half remains suspenseful and terrifying, but the first half, which explores the film's human relationships, really gels with repeat viewings. I was dismissive of the idea that Melanie's growing attraction to Mitch and involvement in his life was the main cause of the birds' attack, but the notion grows more and more plausible with each viewing."
