This is from Scott Frank, creator of the Queen's Gambit. The actors playing the lead investigator (Matthew Goode) and his assistant (Alexej Manvelov) are brilliant and make season one worth watching. The case they are investigating is convoluted and contrived. Presumably it was adapted from the book. Although I never really bought into the case, I enjoyed watching the investigative team enough to make this very worthwhile.

It succeeds very well in creating the tense, claustrophobic atmosphere of a crew packed into a small spaceship. The actors were mostly convincing. The story could have gone in a different, more satisfying direction. But a very good effort for indie sci-fi.

The start in space is promising with good special effects for the era. The landing on Mars is initially interesting but gradually becomes tedious. Some of the visuals filmed on Death Valley are great but not enough to compensate for the bad acting and silly plot. The best actor in the movie is actually the monkey!

A fun, entertaining concept with good actors and strong production values. However, the rather thin plot is stretched out over 9 episodes of season one. Half of season one is very memorable and the other half is pure filler. I hope they get better writers for season two.
