"I wanted to fall into this movie, to be immersed and serenaded with intelligence and beauty. Instead, it bumps along with unbelievable plot holes that could easily have been avoided, and unfortunately gets bogged in sentimental swampiness. Such sloppy writing shouldn't have been allowed given how much was put into other aspects of the film. It was a visual treat, with some gorgeous sweeping scenes, and made a decent attempt at depth, but ultimately disappoints."

"When I first watched this I would have rated it higher, but on rewatching, it has really aged. The homophobic and racist banter, the age and power difference between the main protagonists who become romantically involved, all left me feeling a bit icky now. But there is no denying that it is also a great movie."

"This was an interesting watch... stretches of okay punctuated with brilliance and astonishing moments of wisdom and insight into our humanity. All this is somehow wrapped in a sense of a fairy-tale ambiance despite it being so full of the horrors of war. I really enjoyed so much of it, but found other parts missing the mark."
