Very few films these day carry a true emotional punch. Most emotions are forced onto us, some are layered with a heavy hand. Not so with united 93. Those who can vividly remember the events of 9/11, no matter where they were in the world, will know the shock and disbelief they felt. The problem with the tragic events was that it was predictable that Hollywood would get its hands on the day that changed the world. Enter Paul Greengrass. Mr Greengrass is a blazing talent that has made his name

The Hole (2001) - Rated 13 Aug 2007

A girl recounts the events leading to the day herself and three school children disappeared in an old wartime bunker, but what is the truth? A good idea that isn't successful on the grounds that the characters are so unsympathetic you end up never caring. Thora Birch is creepy enough, but it's doesn't keep you guessing and there is no real tension.

The Punisher (2004) - Rated 13 Aug 2007

Marvel's vigilante gets a second outing with Tom Jane as Frank Castle, out for revenge when his whole family is wiped out by mob boss John Travolta. Brutally violent but incredibly drawn out, full of caricatures and leaden dialogue. Some of the set pieces were good, but we've been here and done this before. A waste of time.

Maybe Baby (2000) - Rated 13 Aug 2007

Sam (Hugh Laurie) and Lucy (Joely Richardson) desperately want a baby. Whenever they get the opportunity they try, even if it means Sam leaving meetings at the BBC. Sam is an executive who wants to be a script writer, when he comes up with the idea of writing about his and his wife's experiences at wanting a child, but when he starts reading her secret diaries, disaster is just around the corner. About 20 minutes into the film I found myself asking one question. Who cares! I'm not saying th

Heartbreakers (2001) - Rated 13 Aug 2007

A film I wasn't expecting to like but ended up thoroughly enjoying. Silly, yes, but filled with good comic performances and Sigourney Weaver looked better the older she gets.

Le Divorce (2003) - Rated 13 Aug 2007

American sisters (Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts) in Paris start turning heads. One starts an affair with an older man, the other in the process of a divorce and a battle over a valuable painting. Despite the predigree of a Merchant/Irovy production and a very classy cast, this is incredibly dull. Neither funny nor dramatic to be called a romantic comedy/drama. Hard work.

Cookie's Fortune (1999) - Rated 13 Aug 2007

Small town Southern America is the setting for this black comedy about an aging woman who's suicide is covered up by her greedy neice, and the town becomes the centre of a murder investigation. No, this isn't a full blown detective film but a leisurely character driven piece from Robert Altman. The ensemble cast is outstanding (even Chris O'Donnell does a fair job as a dopey rookie cop) but if you want fast moving, this isn't for you. Gentle, interesting but not Altman's best
