Transformers: Dark of the Moon
A solid blockbuster summer movie and a satisfying conclusion to the Bayverse trilogy. Yeah, it's what first comes to my mind when thinking about DOTM. And it's true, DOTM in terms of the story, although still flawed, is much more consistent than its predecessor, Revenge of the Fallen. I won't get into the story, but I'll say what the movie did right to make the story more entertaining:
Combining real-world events of man on moon mission with the story of Transformers.
There is humor in this movie, but for the most part, it's limited to the first half. The second half is dark and serious.
I'm repeating myself, but overall this film is the most serious in terms of tone in the trilogy and embraces the dark and brutal aspects and consequences of the war between Autobots and Decepticons on Earth.
Fast-paced story, amazing action sequences, and as always, phenomenal VFX.
However, DOTM is not flawless either:
Characters from previous movies disappear with little to no satisfying explanation, e.g. McCaryla, Skids, Mudflap.
Some plot holes here and there.
But overall, DOTM is a very entertaining watch, and what I liked most about this one is that it leans into the darker and more deadly consequences of Transformers' presence and their war on Earth. And although there was mayhem and destruction in the previous two movies, DOTM really ups the scale and the stakes. And honestly, this is what I like most about Bay's movies. The Transformers really look and feel like an alien race, a race of robotic metal titans with super advanced technology that can easily crush humans underfoot and destroy their cities. I know their designs are not G1 designs, but I actually prefer it (Nothing against G1, though. It's just my preference)
All in all, I love the first three films by Michael Bay, flaws and all. I know they're disliked for a lot of reasons, and some of them I agree with, but they were practically my introduction to the world of Transformers. And no matter what, they will always be special to me.
A word of warning though, if you like the first three movies in Bayverse Transformers, do not watch movies 4 and 5. Why? Because they mostly contradict the lore and story that came before them, and ultimately, they're even worse written than the previous films. But most of all, the robot to human ratio that was always a criticism of the trilogy becomes worse in four and five, to the point that in The Last Knight, it's almost five to one for the humans. So, yeah, skip 4 and 5 if you enjoy the first trilogy.
