Frankenstein
Pseudo-deep, pseudo-intelligent, pseudo-important, melodramatic cheap kitsch I found excruciatingly long and boring to sit through. Deeply uninteresting.
The acting I found mostly weak, too. Isaac's accent was...well...silly wouldn't describe it, because that implies amusement. More annoying. Mia Goth even more so. I have no idea if that's her actual voice or what she was doing there or what that accent was supposed to be, but it was just bad. None of the melodramatic kitsch worked at all when it came to the main players. Christoph Waltz excluded, though he was neither a main player nor doing kitsch.
Jacob Elordi was funny at least. Though that wasn't a good thing, either. I've seen two movies with him and in both he just sounds fucking dumb whenever he talks. Hilariously so. I have no idea why this performance is supposed to be an argument for taking him seriously as an actor. It felt like watching a high school stage play. Where the tall, lanky guy wanted to play an important part so people would notice him to help his modelling career or something.
The supposed connection between Elizabeth and the thing was bafflingly forced and only felt random. Like, we get it, Guillermo del Toro. You do Guillermo del Toro things. But even Michael Bay puts lens flares where they belong. Integrate it into the story or leave it out completely. The movie didn't need it.
The last interaction between Victor and Victor was laughably cheesy and stupid. In that I laughed out loud multiple times as well as facepalmed.
Now, I'm aware of del Toro's style, and I wouldn't expect him to make a smart movie at this point, and I was prepared to find this kind of meh, as I do often find his work, and as I mainly did the first half of this, but the second one sucked way too hard. This was just bad. I do give him points for it being otherwise very competently made, of course. Costumes, production design, music...cinematography...I don't know...too much low contrast , dark, washed out modern digi look.
Also liked the Danish actors and all the boat stuff.

I feel like this is the version of FRANKENSTEIN that Branagh wanted to make: a splashy, bold and at times genuinely moving version of this tale, that brings a laser focus to the...
