Big is one of those films that perfectly captures the warmth and lightness of the 1980s. Beneath its simple fantasy premise, it is really about growing up without completely losing the curiosity, honesty, playfulness, and sense of wonder that belong to childhood.

Tom Hanks makes that idea work beautifully. His character enters the adult world with the openness of a child and, in doing so, exposes how complicated, serious, and emotionally restricted that world can become.

The film is funny, charming, and effortlessly nostalgic, but there is also something quietly melancholic underneath it. Growing up is inevitable, yet Big gently reminds us that becoming an adult does not have to mean abandoning the child within.

For me, that is what makes it one of the defining feel-good films of the 1980s.
Mini Review: Capturing the warmth and lightness of the 1980s through a charming, quietly melancholic Tom Hanks performance, this defining feel-good film exposes how emotionally restricted adulthood can become while gently reminding us to grow up without abandoning the child within.
