Big is a wonderful family film. The story is one right out of a dream, and Tom Hanks does a wonderful and surprisingly believable job as a preteen in a thirty year old's body. Awesome!

Hanks, who needs no incitement to act immature, is here given carte blanche. The situation is not explored too far or too logically. Everything happens a little easily for the hero, and his swift rise to an executive post at a toy company (with Perkins as a perk) gives him little reason to wax nostalgic over Lost Youth. But there are some charming moments (like the tap-dance of two grown men on an oversized electric keyboard at FAO Schwartz), and the humor is never aggressive, never abrasive.

Watching Big as an adult is every bit as enjoyable as watching it as a child, but for completely different reasons. As a kid you empathise with young Josh, revelling in his joys of freedom and novelty of life as a grown-up; as an adult it's old Josh (and Susan) who you connect with, their doomed relationship becoming the focal point and giving the story a sombre air that makes the film that much more powerful, staying with you long after the credits have rolled. One of my all-time favourites.

Hanks is perfect as the child-man/man-child and his physical comedy abilities are on full show here. It's hard not to like 1980s Tom Hanks, particularly when in 'zany' mode. Having said that, this film seems very popular and I cannot fully understand why; sure it's funny and poignant in parts, but it's also certainly an uneven film (for example John Heard is far from believable as the 'villain').

Just rewatched for the first time in at least ten, maybe fifteen years. It’s only intermittently truly funny and has all kinds of weird implications (like the hero making Elizabeth Perkins into an unwitting statutory rapist?!!) - but it’s also undeniably cute and charming and whimsical and kind of quietly iconic in a lighthearted 80s way. For some reason the first bit with the computer game with the ice wizard is one of the most amusing bits to me. But the piano scene is more famous.

This is a fun film, the kind of film you can watch with the whole family. Tom Hanks is excellent in the lead role. The film would not work without a good performance and Hanks delivers. The script is fun and Penny Marshall does a very good job at directing. I would recommend this well made movie.

Childhood classic revisited. One of those rare movies that gets better from the perspective of a grown-up. Even though i haven't seen this film in about 15 years, I still remembered some scenes as clear as I would have seen them yesterday. Coming-of-age movie that reminds what it is like to be a child, and look at the problems from a different angle.

The best of several "body switching" fantasies from this period, this well-directed, perceptively written comedy is highlighted by Hanks's charming performance as the innocent little boy in a man's body who tries to come to grips with landing a job, finding a place to live, and dealing with the romantic interest of coworker Perkins. Contrived in places but still one of the best, most honest "feel-good" movies of the 1980s.

Big is much more interested in sticking to its plot devices than its interesting themes. The film tries to be funny, and while often is, it relies too often on awkward humor (i hate) and Tom Hanks being an annoying kid (i hate). And Liz Perkins actually ends up believing Hanks' story? WTF? But the heart is there. When Hanks quickly gets trapped in the routine of adulthood and forgets what's more important (becoming a kid again), the audience looks inward. Basically, good, not great.

A movie from a time when wholesome family friendly movies weren't subject to sucking major ass is such a breeze of fresh air these days. The character relations in this movie feel so real, which is what raises it above most other of it's kind. At least the ones made the last 10 years. Wish they hadn't stopped making them like this. Sweet and touching, and a great performance from Tom Hanks. A movie every child should see, as well as adults.

How nice it is to have a reunion from the time when Tom Hanks was the laughing stock. "Big" is the film's gift to the fine movie culture that once was. A well-told little straight-out-of-the-road comedy, enriched by an extremely well-placed Tom Hanks, hand in hand with a charming Elizabeth Perkins.

Plays like a kid's weird dream, with big, childishly drawn arcs (in mere weeks he goes from scared kid to successful adult to workaholic, all the while faking his own kidnapping and writing his mom like it's no big deal), which feels awkward but I guess is fitting. The fun fish out of water in the arid adult landscape angle is very enjoyable ("three dimes, a hundred dollar bill and 87 ones"), though the romance ending with a sweet farewell instead of a grown woman horrified is a misstep there.

Sweet natured fantasy is arguably too contrived and 'cute' at times, but is still a winner, thanks to Hanks (possibly the only actor capable of pulling this off) and a well stocked supporting cast, highlighted by a rare warm and cuddly performance from Loggia. Screenplay wisely avoids a stock villain (though Heard comes close), instead creating conflict from Hanks' interaction with the adult world (and taking some cues from BEING THERE). Good fun.

This film has a lot of heart and soul... and not just played on a giant piano-pad on the floor. Tom Hanks is a delight in this film about growing up. I love how this movie looks at adulthood from the perspective of a child. Wow, we can stay up late and order pizza and make a lot more money at a real job than you can get from a paper route! Then love finds its way in and you feel like you need to man up and be more responsible...

A runty boy (David Moscow) wishes on a mechanical fortune-teller to be big--and wakes up the next morning as Tom Hanks. Delightful fantasy comedy, brightly directed by Penny Marshall, which owes something of a debt to BEING THERE as youth and innocence are taken for wisdom and insight. Hanks, deservedly Oscar-nominated, is spot-on throughout, and the minor weaknesses of the script don't obscure how funny and touching it is. The supporting cast is fine, but it needs more Robert Loggia.

Big was one of my favourite childhood films that I will never grow out of. Tom Hanks showcases himself brilliantly and gives one of his most charming, honest and memorable performances. There are so many special moments that stick out in my mind, in particular the piano scene in the mall. This is a film I cant wait to show my own children. Nowadays children are sadly brainwashed with so many films about robots and superheroes, but its family classics like Big that truly stand the test of time.

A charming film, fatally undermined by a lack of attention to 'dark matter'. Needed more about the whole notion of man-children, a thing seemingly celebrated today by the Hollywidiots like Seth Rogen and Will Farrell, but presented way more problematically here. Were we really more grown-up in the 1980s?

Everyone my age saw this at what I thought was the appropriate time, but I'm an adult now and I cannot figure this movie out. Is it really for adults? Is it for teens? What does it teach either of those demographics with its silliness coupled with depressing reality and awkward sex? I laugh at people like Hanks' character in real life, then feel bad about it because they legitimately don't "get" things. Sort of like me not "getting" this. Oh, wait.
