Smilla’s Sense of Snow is an intriguing thriller told with a distinctly Nordic temperament and pace. Its cold atmosphere and deliberate rhythm suit a story about power, ambition, and the ruthlessness of people who are prepared to sacrifice almost anything for professional success.

At the center of it all is a small boy who simply gets in the way. His death becomes the starting point for Smilla’s investigation and gradually exposes a world in which careerism, scientific ambition, and institutional power matter more than individual lives.

From my point of view, both the novel and the film are considerably overrated. The story is often treated as more profound and sophisticated than it really is, and parts of it feel self-important. Yet despite that, it undeniably has a pull. The atmosphere, the mystery, and Smilla’s stubborn determination keep drawing you further into the story.

Overrated, perhaps, but still compelling.
Mini Review: Intriguing thriller told with a distinctly Nordic temperament, using its cold atmosphere and deliberate pace to expose a ruthless world where scientific ambition and institutional power matter more than a small boy's life. While both the novel and the film are considerably overrated and occasionally self-important, the story undeniably retains a strong pull. Carried by its mystery and Smilla’s stubborn determination, it remains a compelling watch despite its inflated reputation.
