Acknowledging the role of the camera, including it as an active agent of the bourgeoisie in a narrative that seeks to explore our current class struggle is a stroke of genius, giving the film its essential humility. A continuation of what Zhangke was doing with 24 City or Gomes in The Restless One, bringing documentary confessionals into the fiction to account for the real: The disintegration of identity and spirit among those deprived of a vocation.

The film is gestural and complex. Gazes filled with desire and contempt, bursts of irrationality, and moments of dissociative clarity all inform and complicate an otherwise simple story of coveting and connection between classes. It’s best to just experience and feel Lee’s depiction of the human struggle against the destruction of interiority wrought by technology and state.
