Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice
Two couples flirt with the idea of being emotionally honest and eventually learn the lesson that the old ways are probably best and what people really want is to enjoy a Tony Bennett concert together. In short, superficially daring but actually gives the audience the easy way out. Robert Culp is a good actor but shouldn’t his character really have been played by George Segal? I’m trying to recollect whether, in the late 1970s, my psychologist/psychiatrist parents actually got involved with Erhard Seminars Training or it was just their friends.
As a further aside to that, it is worth mentioning that once, just after I had reached the age of adulthood, I was in a bookstore and a particular title caught my eye, so I pulled it down from the shelf: it was called Children of Psychiatrists and Other Psychotherapists, by Thomas Maeder (1989), and its subject of inquiry was the question of whether the children of psychiatrists and psychologists are crazy. I recollect flicking through a few pages and then making the conscious decision that I preferred not to know the evidence the author had gathered, nor the conclusions to which he had come, and then sliding the volume back into its spot on the shelf. About three and a half decades later (writing in July 2026), suddenly this question seems of more interest to me.
