Halloween
11/10/2023:
The only reason this is not getting a 1/10 is because the main theme is a classic. That being said, the way the music is used in this the the worst ever, the timing, the placement, the fact it only comes on the exact moment shit happens. The opening is a classic but its' also shit when you consider we have no real reason for it explained in THIS film. Michel is just crazy and is supernatural out of the gate in the most contrived way. The Dr or whoever he is is just pointless... wtf is this considered a classic? Is it because someone made a slasher first?!?!

Okay I watched this again and I honestly have no idea what the appeal of a super slow slasher with only 3 kills (5 if you count the intro and a dog.) It honestly astounds me because the acting, audio, cinematography pacing, and plot are all bad! I swear this was thought to be good just because of the music and because it's the first of a "new" genre.

Sigh. This is the third time I have tried to give Halloween a fair shot, and I still do not understand why it is so universally celebrated. I recognize its historical importance and that it is often credited with inventing the slasher genre, but that does not automatically make it engaging. For me, it is painfully dull and dreadfully boring.
The film feels like all the creativity and fun were sacrificed in the name of minimalism. Long stretches of slow stalking, flat performances, and a near total lack of momentum drain tension instead of building it. The acting does nothing for me. The audio design feels empty rather than atmospheric. The cinematography looks plain. The pacing crawls. By the time anything meaningful happens, my interest is already gone.
I have watched this three separate times and even consumed dozens of videos explaining why it is considered a masterpiece, so this is not a snap judgment. I understand what it represents for the genre. I just do not think it holds up as an experience at all and fails what it is trying to do.
If you want to dismiss my opinion entirely, you might find comfort in knowing that I think Halloween: Resurrection is one of the more entertaining entries in the franchise. Maybe that says more about my taste than the film itself. I tend to prefer slashers that are fun or thrilling. A Nightmare on Elm Street feels imaginative and energetic. Friday the 13th is at least more visceral. Compared to those, Halloween feels restrained to the point of lifelessness.
At this point, it may be more accurate to say that I simply do not connect with this franchise at all. I can appreciate what it started, but I would rather watch the films it inspired.
