Martyrs

What can even be said about this film? I thought it was nothing special and I was proven wrong multiple times. It's still not the most messed up film I have seen but it's one of the most graphic just the same. The bleakness in this is something to behold, and the cinematography in this was just amazing. There's some cliché things in this but I did like this film a lot and I MAY never watch it again!

This is my second time watching this and I figure I would give my spoiler review on this and go a little bit more into this.
The first and only flaw I have with this film is within the first 40 minutes with the imaginary trauma demon. I get why she's there but feel it could have been implemented better. The film portrays it like it's a really real threat and slowly hints at it being just the traumatized girl self-harming and while that's one way of doing it, I felt that it makes this film feel more supernatural then it ends up being. A lot of this film is from an objective sense from the main characters point of view and that perspective changes with the switching of the main perspective characters. It also technically changes at the end with a small minor role with a perspective character that ends the film off without giving us answers. That's perhaps the best way to end the film, but not the best way to start the film.
Okay, with the only gripe making it so I don't give this a 10/10 out of the way. This is truly a heart breaking and very tough film to watch. Every thing in it is so bleak and brutal and there's not a moment in this film that's comfortable or safe. All of the injuries and punish blows feel so real that it's almost impossible now to cringe or squirm. The craft on display with this film is harrowing and effective. It might say strange to say I love this film but it's one of those films that I am just in awe that it exists. It's a descent into madness that makes me both hollow and filled with wonder by the end.
The most interesting thing I alluded to earlier is how the last perspective character kills herself to keep the answers she got away from those interested in what's up with life after death. The coolest thing to me is that she could have gotten a real answer, something she could not hear, or just plain gibberish. Killing herself in response to any of those have vastly different implications on what the whole purpose of this torture was for. Did she do it because it was all just a was of time? Perhaps she just wanted to get into the afterlife as soon as she could. The craziest thought is that if she couldn't hear anything, she just decided to fuck around with everyone because she's tired of what she's been doing! There's so much to talk about that I can't cram all my thoughts in a review that would do it justice without much thought.
I said before I would never watch this again the first time I saw if but I keep getting more from this film the more I think about it. It's a very tough watch and I think at this point, the next time I watch it would have to be with someone else! Anyway, I am still feeling good and going to try and give the remake a chance!
