Underwater

This is was unexpectedly a great film to watch after I was spoiled the ending. There is so much suspense and tension and I love the themes of isolation. Kristen Stewart was great but I think I was watching this more for the fear of thalassophobia.

On a rewatch I realize just how much I love this movie. I love deep sea movies and there's a similar wonderment to it just like with space. From the total darkness, to the complexities of pressure, I would argue it's even more dangerous then space! The isolation in this film is palatable and I still feel a looming sense of dread by the thalassophobia that this invokes in me.
The characters serve the fear really well because everyone knows how dangerous this situation this has become and every one of them deals with it in a different way. Some deal with it by joking and others deal with the pressure by stamping it out. I also appreciate the resilience and refusal to give up as well as how much they would sacrifice themselves for other. I feel that trait is lacking in a lot of media as of late. It's good to see humanity in people.
When I first watched this, it was spoiled for me and it affected my enjoyment, but on a rewatch, I have to admit I really love it. It is firing on all cylinders to me and just scratches that deep sea itch. This has to be the best January theater release I have seen alongside Iron Lung. It amuses me that both of them are about trying to get out of an impossible situation in the depths. This one in particular blows Iron Lung out of the water but perhaps Iron Lung deserves a rewatch as well!
