The Lost Bus
Suitably gripping and effective, Paul has this kind of thing mostly down pat, if a tad formulaic and minimal. Prayers for those affected, yes, but Greengrass never allows a minute of this to escape his stylistic ticks. Be they his jittery editing, his insistence on mixing on real footage with his VFX showcase, or just plain moments of cinematic manipulation for suspense or unearned tears. (This, only a few minutes in, deals in some true misery porn for the purpose of “latter day redemption” that should’ve been left in the rough draft stage.)
Never outright “bad” bad, but so much of this feels sensationalized and exploitative. Making an “entertainment” out of a very real and (admittedly) tragic true story. A meager six when all is said and done.
