A much heralded landmark in the evolution of computer generated animation, and surprisingly this aspect actually stands up very well some 25 years later – the integration of apparently “real” jungle and ocean backdrops in which to situate its animated characters works pretty much flawlessly, providing a real sense of verisimilitude to the notion of this being almost a nature documentary. And then the characters open their mouths… it’s the overly familiar and sophomoric nature of the writing that limits this, and more or less assigns it to suitable for younger children only, but even they would be better served watching THE LION KING, which covers broadly similar thematic material in a more interesting and intelligent way. A fine voice cast at least makes the sometimes execrable dialogue fun to listen to; an extra pang for the unmistakeable dulcet tones of the recently departed Plowright.
