This definitely sits in the memory and I feel like a rewatch is in order to properly get my head around what Kitano’s point is here, but on first watch it’s a fascinating tale contrasting Kitano’s brutal cop/ex-cop with the tenderly poignant relationships he shares with his partners, as well as his wife, all of which are beautifully and poetically handled by Kitano, especially the flourishes of shocking violence that pierce the otherwise quiet and pensive mood. Leads to a finale shot that is an absolute haunting stunner.
