Heavyweights

Fairly generic camp movie that distinguishes itself on a couple of the minor details – it’s refreshing to see a 90s kids movie that is relatively body-positive, it’s great fun to see the seeds of Stiller’s malicious jerk-act that would come to full flower in the 00s (though he is the definite highlight here), and it’s wonderful to see the undervalued McGowan given an opportunity to step centre stage and more or less carry the movie, even if there are times when he seems to be battling for leading man with Stiller. Labours the point by going on too long after the story reaches its natural climax, but in the sometimes treacherous kid camp genre, this one passes with modest flying colours.
