If I hadn’t overdosed on STEP UP, and any number of rags-to-riches dance movies from the 00s already, I may well have had more time and sympathy for this – you know exactly what is going to happen going in, and the movie resolutely hits its beats without pausing for air. Alba is badly miscast here as one of the most finely primped and pampered “rough diamonds” the genre has ever seen, and I’m not sure she sets the world on fire as a dancer. M’eh - it’s far from terrible and watchable enough in its way, but basically unnecessary if you have access to any other “street dancing” effort.
