Despite being a 90s teen/pre-teen, this is the first substantive interaction I’ve ever had with the Power Rangers, and it feels like something I may have enjoyed more at the time than I have today. As a film, it’s on par with the sort of low-budget sci-fi show that would screen on TV somewhere after school and before the News, and it’s odd that such a huge brand built on action and effects would do nothing to elevate its production values for the big screen (unless it was scared of losing its rustic charm!) The Rangers, clearly imitated after the Ninja Turtles, are a bland group of heroes; at least Freeman seems to have a good enough time camping to the heavens as their villain.
