Nine Months

Much like MICKEY BLUE EYES, the fundamental failing of this movie is its misuse of Grant – he is far too serenely unflappable to be able to make this sort of escalating anxiety farce work, and one can imagine this at least being more lively with, say, Stiller, whose more manic energy would have been an asset. This is otherwise a very tepid and flaccid comedy, whose weird shifts of tonal energy make it a frustrating experience to sit through; Arnold and Cusack are (sadly) painful to bear, because their grating caricatures are completely out of place with Grant and Moore’s low-key dullness. And don’t get me started on the praying mantis fantasies…. (!!) An ill-conceived idea, in every sense of the word!
