Nouvelle Vague
Thoroughly enjoyed this as Linklater’s tribute to Godard, two film-maker’s I would not necessarily leap to pair together; Linklater gets the look, feel and texture of Godard’s aesthetic style and wraps it around one of his conventionally structured, “hang-out” movies and makes for a very enjoyable step back in time, especially thanks to Marbeck and Deutch’s pitch-perfect (and convincing) evocations of Godard and Seberg. I’m not sure Linklater is aiming for anything more insightful or profound except capturing a specific era using the specific stylings of a specific film-maker and on that level, it’s an invigorating success.
