Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

More of a cavalcade of jokes than a coherent “movie”, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but this needed to be more nimble in its pacing in order to skip over the groaners and get to the good stuff; there comes a point in the mid-section where the film nearly fatally sinks under its weight (and its around about the time it forgets about the mockumentary conceit). Thankfully it course-corrects in the nick of time, leading to a strong and satisfying finale. Good sport performances from the “real” and fictional personalities help (I’d have loved to see more of an underused Mariah Carey), and while it’s destined to be one of those films you look back on in fondness and amusement at parts rather than the whole, on that basis it’s good fun.
