Game effort to be the all-female HANGOVER has some amusing ideas (I liked the softie husband and his sensitive pals on the homefront), and an overall fine cast, but is so soft-footed and tender in its execution that it never manages to catch alight – and if you’re going to have a comedic narrative that involves murder, you need to be a little more aggressive and acrid in your humour – there ends up being an odd disconnect in making what should be more savage and raunchy humour palatable for a “soccer mom” audience. As it is, it remains a set of interesting ideas that don’t really go anywhere (especially the sequences involving Moore and Burrell) – and the underlying irony of McKinnon using what sounds to my antipodean ear as closer to a New Zealand accent than an Australian one is never addressed!
