An ultimately frustrating film of two warring halves: a contrived, conventional and toothless black comedy that takes far too long to get where it wants to go, forcing Myers and Travis to play low-key romance, rather than the more broadly farcical strokes the material requires (I could see a version where Travis plays a more believably deranged killer-type that Myers was oblivious to working much better). Indeed, it’s the other, broader half that works far better – Myers and Fricker are a scream as Myers’ parents, and every scene set in the strange Mackenzie household works like gangbusters, because the film suddenly becomes aware of what it wants to be. Worthwhile as a signpost towards Myers’ more successful AUSTIN POWERS’ outings, but doesn’t really work in isolation. A gaggle of comic cameos are more a distracting hindrance than a help.
