Refined and generally understated Asian horror builds considerable atmospheric tension to couch its admittedly “jump scare” horror moments – as I’ve said in the past, these sort of scares work for me; individual mileage may vary, but the Pang Brothers do a good job of juggling the horror with an intriguing back-story to explain the supernatural phenomenon, while basing the action in a convincing, everyday urban sprawl. Borrows a little too liberally from THE SIXTH SENSE (and not *quite* in the way you might imagine), and the vast array of characters seem a little cluttered at times; the finale is also a little too bombastic for the otherwise wispy narrative, but overall it’s a successful (and quite unsettling) genre piece.
