Dog Soldiers
This is a great example of a simple, over the top, unpretentious film. It takes it self serious enough to be engaging, but it never attempts to deliver anything it can’t. Great fun.
Don't go in expecting a serious and tense horror film, this is more in the lines of Predator. There are some inconsistencies with how things work, but it seems deliberate. I believe there was a decision to sacrifice a bit of world building and immersion in order to deliver some really entertaining scenes, you will know what I mean when you see it.
The cinematography starts out weak there is too much zoom, shake, sped up footage, and indiscernible action. However, everything changes 20 minutes in, and the spaces, scenery and action are really well shot. I don’t know why this happened, perhaps they shot the early scenes first and still had not found their style.
The dialog is also well written. It is no Jackie Brown, and that is on purpose. The cast is not terrible, but they are limited. The dialogue accounts for that, it never demands more than the actors can deliver.
The movie has a lot of personality and feels unique, despite its simplicity. The strongest aspect are the special effects, an unexpected strength for a $3 million budget. The practical effects are good, from werewolves to the explosions.
All in all, this is quite an achievement considering the budget and cast. It is worth a watch if you are into this sort of flick.

there are a lot of inconsistencies, and some issues with cinematography, but this is not the kind of movie where this things matter much. Pace and personality is the name of the game. (see full review - no spoilers)
