This is a very difficult film for me to review. I think there are some truly interesting aspects of this film. The ideas surrounding the fragility of the male ego, the line between the psuedo-sexual and assault and ultimately the vagueness when it comes to the ideology of home are very impressive. The performances are obviously excellent and David Thewlis delivers a powerhouse performance along with Leslie Sharp's amazing work. With that said I did find watching this, at times, similar to listening to the ramblings of a self-entitled 15 year old boy who acts as if everything he is saying is brand new and whilst Johnny's evergrowing superiority complex is tamed here and there, it does feel like the film slightly revels in it at times. I'm aware that these are intentional on Leigh's part to accentuate the childlike qualities of a broken man but some sections felt like they missed the plot as other, more stable characters are left in slight awe of his vacuous pretentiousness. I think this is a beautiful, yet sliigghhtttlllyy flawed critique on the fucked up power complexes of young men and the various elements that reflect modern day corrupt 'masculinity' (if you can call it that) are scary to say the least. Also the score is insanely good.
