Saint Maud
This film really knows how to get under your skin. It's got Cronenbergian moments of body horror and clear influences from late-60s/70s horror such as Rosemary's Baby and Carrie whilst being framed neatly within the A24 aesthetic. For me, the pay off was not quite worth the build-up and the horror seemed to become more ideas that her character would find scary and not necessarily the audience. I understand that this is an intentional choice but the fact the build-up was grounded in more conventional horror imagery, I still feel the climax should've been an elevation of that same grounded horror. But hey ho, I'm sure loads of people like the bat-shit direction it goes in but for me, it felt slightly tacky in comparison to the rest of the feature whether intended or not. Still 4/5 though. Still a big fan. Me likey.
