First Reformed attempts to tackle a range of complex issues but ultimately falls short. The storyline feels familiar, echoing themes from Taxi Driver and Kubrick’s works, where the protagonist spirals into madness. However, the film’s handling of climate change comes across as heavy-handed, almost propagandist, and fails to convincingly depict Ethan Hawke’s character’s descent into despair. That said, the themes of hope and despair, as well as questions of morality and loneliness, are explored with some depth. The cinematography is striking, carrying the signature A24 aesthetic, and adds a layer of visual interest. Yet, despite its artsy dialogue and pacing, the film proves that stylish visuals and slow-burn storytelling don’t always result in a compelling or impactful experience.
