Club Dread
Broken Lizard's Club Dread has a fun premise, mixing a slasher mystery with the group's signature offbeat comedy. The tropical island setting gives the film its own identity, and the combination of murders, goofy humor, and an ongoing whodunit keeps the story entertaining even when the jokes don't always land.
Bill Paxton steals the movie as Coconut Pete, fully embracing the role with ridiculous songs, endless enthusiasm, and an over-the-top performance that's easily the film's biggest highlight. The Broken Lizard cast has its usual chemistry, and a handful of jokes are genuinely hilarious.
Like many sketch-style comedies, the humor is hit-or-miss, and some gags go on far longer than they should. The horror elements also aren't scary enough for slasher fans, while the mystery often takes a back seat to improvised comedy. It's an amusing concept that never quite reaches its full potential.
