Knives Out
Rian Johnson pulled off something remarkably difficult with Knives Out. He made a modern murder mystery that feels completely fresh while still honoring the classic whodunits that inspired it. The film has the clever plotting and colorful suspects of an Agatha Christie story, but it's packaged with a modern energy and style that make it feel accessible to audiences who might not normally seek out a murder mystery.
The cast is outstanding from top to bottom. Daniel Craig was perfectly cast as Benoit Blanc, creating a detective who is both brilliant and endlessly entertaining. After years of playing James Bond, it was fun to watch Craig showcase a completely different side of his talent. His performance is quirky, memorable, and ultimately becomes the heart of the franchise.
Ana de Armas deserves just as much praise. She gives the film its emotional center and provides a character the audience can genuinely care about amid all the deception and chaos. Chris Evans is also excellent, using his natural charisma to create one of the film's most entertaining personalities.
What makes Knives Out special is the screenplay. Johnson constantly gives the audience just enough information to stay engaged while holding back enough to keep the mystery alive. Every reveal feels earned, and the final act ties everything together beautifully.
It's funny, smart, stylish, and endlessly rewatchable. For me, Knives Out is one of the best mystery films of the last twenty years.
