The Shallows proves that a simple premise can make for an incredibly effective thriller. A surfer trapped on a rock with a great white shark circling nearby creates immediate tension, and the screenplay keeps raising the stakes by forcing Nancy to rely on her intelligence, determination, and limited resources to survive. Jaume Collet-Serra keeps the pacing tight, making excellent use of the confined setting without letting the suspense wear thin.

Blake Lively carries almost the entire film, delivering a believable performance that makes Nancy easy to root for. Her fear, resilience, and resourcefulness keep the story emotionally engaging despite the minimal cast.

Some of Nancy's escapes and injuries require a healthy suspension of disbelief, and the shark often behaves more like a relentless movie monster than a real animal. Even so, the efficient storytelling, strong lead performance, and constant tension make The Shallows one of the better modern survival thrillers.
