Uncut Gems
I can't think of many movies that create anxiety as effectively as Uncut Gems. From the moment it starts, it feels like everything is moving a hundred miles an hour and one bad decision away from disaster. Somehow, the Safdie brothers take that chaos and turn it into one of the most entertaining crime dramas of the last decade.
This is the movie that put the Safdies on the map for a lot of people. They had already built a reputation among film fans, but Uncut Gems showed the rest of Hollywood what they could do. Without this film, I don't think we get projects like Marty Supreme or The Smashing Machine. This was the breakthrough that proved their style could work on a much larger stage.
Adam Sandler gives the best performance of his career. Howard Ratner is the kind of character who should be impossible to root for. He lies, gambles, and makes terrible decisions at every opportunity, yet Sandler somehow keeps the audience invested in him. It's a performance that showed a level of range and dramatic ability that many people didn't know he had.
Julia Fox also makes a memorable debut. She holds her own alongside a cast full of strong personalities and brings authenticity to a character who could have easily been one-dimensional.
What I love most is the screenplay. It doesn't romanticize the hustle. Instead, it shows the exhausting reality of constantly chasing the next deal, the next score, and the next opportunity. The Diamond District feels alive, crowded, and unpredictable, almost like a character of its own.
The movie won't work for everyone. The constant noise, overlapping conversations, and nonstop tension can be overwhelming. For me, that's exactly why it works. Uncut Gems is stressful, chaotic, and occasionally frustrating, but it's also one of the most original and unforgettable films of its era.
