the safdie brothers' style is exhilerating.
an unholy descent into madness, uncut gems gripped me in ways only few films ever have. tension washed through me from the screen and there was never a dull moment, never an unneeded scene, all of it culminating in this thrilling masterpiece.
it's been maybe 3-4 years since i've even seen this and i didn't remember any of it, so the rewatchability was great.
adam sandler can act, and he can do it damn well. how people didn't realise this when punch drunk love came out, i'll never know, but he really proved to the world he can be taken seriously. he plays this conniving, extremely unlikeable character who i grew to love and care for, and almost even relate to.
the gorgeous score by daniel lopatin a.k.a. 'oneohtrix point never' doesn't sound like something that would even remotely work with such a thrilling movie like this, but it doesn't disappoint and manages to give uncut gems the dreamlike atmosphere it needed.
i understand how the ending can completely ruin the movie for some, but i absolutely loved it. i think if anything else would've happened it wouldn't have felt as complete and as i mentioned before i didn't remember or expect it at all.
uncut gems is a true masterpiece and something that could've only been made in the 21st century with the direction of josh and bennie safdie otherwise it wouldn't have had the same riveting effect it had on me.
